Grave of the Vampire

In 1940s California, a college student Paul gathers the courage to pop the question to his girlfriend, Leslie Hollander, right in the cemetery where they first shared a shy kiss. The moment seems like a bright spark in a quiet town, until the crypt beneath the ground stirs uneasily. From the darkness emerges Caleb Croft, a former serial rapist and killer who has risen as a vampire. In a brutal assault, Croft slays Paul and attacks Leslie, setting off a chain of events that will ripple through the entire community. A local lieutenant, Panzer, is drawn to the scene and quickly uncovers a chilling clue: Croft’s tomb has been emptied as the killer begins a new, predatory life among the living.

Panzer’s investigation intensifies as he confronts the horrifying truth about the man who slithered between life and death. He visits a hospital where a catatonic Leslie lies, and when Croft’s mugshot is shown, she recoils as if the image itself has teeth. The revelation lands with devastating clarity: Croft was a prolific murderer and rapist in Massachusetts, electrocuted in the Boston Subway while trying to outrun the law, and his body was interred in California to keep his ghastly legend from becoming a vandal’s target. Croft’s reach proves to be more immediate than anyone expected when he infiltrates a local home, murderously feeding on a housewife, further cementing his legacy as a nocturnal predator.

Leslie faces a grim diagnosis shortly before her discharge: she is pregnant, and the fetus appears abnormal. The doctor urges an abortion, but Leslie stands firm in her decision, clinging to the belief that life can still be ordinary even when shadowed by fear. Meanwhile, Panzer returns to Croft’s tomb only to meet a lethal end at the hands of the very monster he’s chasing, a reminder of how swiftly fear can turn into fatal encounter.

Months pass, and Leslie, now orphaned by the deaths around her, gives birth to a son. The infant’s pallor and stubborn reluctance to take milk alarm her, yet she discovers a startling truth: the child gains strength by consuming blood. In a stark and intimate arc, Leslie begins drawing her own blood into syringes and feeding the newborn, whom she names James, who grows under a shadowy inheritance that will mark his future.

Three decades later, Leslie dies, and James inherits a life defined by vengeance. He channels his sorrow into a singular mission: to hunt the father he never truly knew. His wanderings lead him to a folk mythology class where he meets Anita Jacoby, a graduate student, and her roommate Anne Arthur. James is unaware that their professor, a man named Adrian Lockwood, is, in fact, Caleb Croft living under a different identity. During their first seminar, James captivates the room with his discussion of Charles Croydon, a 17th-century English vampire legend, and the case of Caleb Croft, drawing Croft’s attention with his passion and knowledge.

After class, Anne speaks with Croft, and he confesses in a disarmingly gentle way that she reminds him of his late wife, Sarah. The tension between knowledge, fear, and desire begins to thread through the suburban academic world, foreshadowing the peril that lurks just beneath the surface. That night, Croft eliminates the university librarian, a grim reminder of his old methods resurfacing in a new era. James attends a party with Anita, who rumors that Croft and Croft’s past may be more entwined than they realize, and Anne shares a quiet, uneasy moment with Croft, who insists he is nothing like the ruthless fiend she suspects.

Anita, fiercely curious and unafraid, confronts Croft and asks to be turned into a vampire so she can be his bride. Croft plays along, then ruthlessly slashes her throat, severing any hope of a conventional romance with the past. Anne discovers Anita’s body, and James, drawn by screams, rushes to save her as Croft recedes into the night.

The following evening, James and Anne join several fellow students at Croft’s opulent estate, where the vampire conducts a séance. He calls out to his dead wife, Sarah, attempting possession of Anne. Yet the death-haunted voice of Anita speaks from beyond the grave, exposing Croft to the gathered students. Croft orders Anne to cast Anita out, and she collapses as the terrifying truth settles in. James carries Anne upstairs, while Croft disappears into the shadows.

A tense confrontation unfolds when James and Anne return to a lavish, dangerous world—Croft’s estate becomes a stage for a deadly confrontation. Croft slaughters the remaining students, and James, discovering that the man he’s hunted is his father, strikes Croft with a wooden stake. Croft dies, but the battle isn’t over. James begins to convulse, and Anne, regaining consciousness, discovers that James has begun to change as well—fangs peer from his mouth, signaling a terrifying inheritance fulfilled.

As the credits roll, the film leaves the audience with a haunting final line etched on the screen: “Fin. Ou peut-être pas?…” The End. Or perhaps not?
