A group of French soldiers, from aristocratic Captain de Boeldieu to working‑class Lieutenant Maréchal, are captured in World I and imprisoned in a German camp. Transferred to a high‑security fortress, they devise an escape while being observed by German officer von Rauffenstein, who has formed an unlikely friendship with de Boeldieu.
