The story begins in India during the years 1977–78 and shifts back and forth between that period and 2016, offering a rich tapestry of characters and events. It starts with Bhola, a kind and helpful young man from the village of Bassi Pathana in Punjab, played by Amrinder Gill. Bhola’s innocence and generous nature make him beloved by everyone around him, and his life takes an interesting turn when a panchayat imposes a condition: he must marry Shindi, portrayed by Aditi Sharma, if he wishes to earn enough money to build a house on land allotted by the panchayat.
This land, which Bhola hopes to develop, requires ₹1000 for construction, a sum he aims to earn through hard work. However, just as he starts his journey to gather funds, the demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1000 notes in 1978 under the Janata Party government causes his earnings to become worthless, plunging him into disappointment. Despite this setback, the villagers rally around Bhola, exemplifying community support and resilience, which highlights the deep bonds within the village.
Fast forward to 2016, and the story introduces us to the bustling market of Bassi Pathana, where Chaman Lal Sachdeva played by Jaswinder Bhalla and Satpal Aneja portrayed by BN. Sharma are seen as rivals who desperately want to dominate the local market and be declared the leader of the area. Their rivalry fuels much of the tension, especially as their children become entangled. Neeta, portrayed by Harish Verma, is the daughter of Chaman Lal, working with her father at their ladies’ suit shop. On the other hand, Mishri, played by Simi Chahal, owns a sweet shop alongside her father Satpal, who runs a sweet shop and harbors animosity towards Mishri and her family due to longstanding family rivalry.
Despite their initial antagonism, Neeta and Mishri grow closer, and their relationship evolves beyond family tensions. Their budding romance faces complications when they decide to elope on November 8, 2016, with the funds collected for a traditional Jaagran (prayer gathering). Their plan is to spend one night together at a hotel, escaping the constraints of their families’ disapproval. However, their secret is interrupted when the government unexpectedly demonetizes ₹500 and ₹1000 notes, throwing their plans into chaos, and forcing them to return home and resume their everyday lives.
The narrative then shifts to how Neeta, along with Mishri, navigates societal pressures and familial expectations. When Kiran’s marriage faces cancellation due to the inability to meet the dowry demands, Neeta and Mishri, with help from friends, work to arrange the dowry, demonstrating solidarity and friendship amid societal struggles.
Interwoven within these events is a poignant flashback revealing Bhola’s earlier struggles. At Shindi’s house, where Aditi Sharma again appears as Shindi, her brother disapproves of Bhola’s presence and takes him to a local panchayat, which challenges Bhola to marry Shindi if he hopes to build his future. Accepting the challenge, Bhola goes back to work with aspirations to earn enough to construct the house. Sadly, the demonetization in 1978 ruins his efforts, illustrating how political decisions impact the lives of ordinary villagers.
The story culminates in the modern day at Kiran’s wedding, where Neeta and Mishri succeed in convincing Kiran’s father-in-law to approve the marriage, symbolizing hope and progress over adversity. The film weaves themes of love, resilience, societal pressure, and community support, portraying how individuals navigate personal and collective challenges across decades.
This is a story of perseverance through changing times, reminding us that no matter how difficult the circumstances, hope and unity can prevail.
