Lorenzo feels compelled to atone for his older brother's cruelty. When Marcello orders him to remove Aida from the mansion, Lorenzo is struck by her vulnerability, he sees a woman abandoned with only a suitcase, similar to how his own family has mistreated her. His conscience won't let him simply turn her away, so he takes her to a pensione and begins secretly providing for her.
