What Happens in Gentleman Jim: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Gentleman Jim (1942) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 1887 San Francisco, boxing is illegal. James J. Corbett, Errol Flynn, a brash young bank teller, attends a match with his friend Walter Lowrie. When a police raid nabs Judge Geary, a member of the bank’s board, Corbett’s quick wit helps his superior slip out of trouble. The judge is determined to lift boxing’s image by recruiting men from more respectable backgrounds and having them fight under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, even importing British coach Rhys Williams to assess prospects. Williams spots Corbett’s natural talent, forged in a tough Irish immigrant family headed by Pat Corbett, Alan Hale, and impressed by his seemingly polished demeanor.

Geary sees in Corbett a model fighter who could bridge class divides, while Corbett’s own growing fame brings him into frequent clashes with the upper crust, especially Victoria Ware, Alexis Smith. Yet despite their friction, Corbett is drawn to her, and his boundless self-confidence and charm gradually win her over.

As the story unfolds, Corbett turns professional. He hires a manager, Billy Delaney, William Frawley, and develops a sharper, more sophisticated boxing style that emphasizes footwork over the old-style brawling. This new approach stands in sharp contrast to the reigning world champion John L. Sullivan, Ward Bond, whose era of unrefined power is challenged by Corbett’s careful technique and strategic movement.

After a string of victories, Corbett earns the opportunity to meet the legendary Sullivan in the ring. Corbett’s method of boxing baffles the champion, and the unthinkable happens: Corbett wins not only the title but also Victoria. The film culminates in a dramatic moment as Corbett is crowned the new heavyweight champion, and his victory party is punctuated by the arrival of the defeated Sullivan, who comes to present the championship belt to his successor.
