Estelle Rolfe, Anne Bancroft, is a middle-aged, divorced and outspoken social activist whose forthright stance often unsettles her devoted grown son Gilbert, Ron Silver. When a terminal brain tumor is diagnosed, Estelle frames her final wish as a deeply personal mission: to meet the movie icon she has admired for years, the reclusive Greta Garbo.
Gilbert’s wife Lisa, Carrie Fisher, initially offers sympathy for the quest, hoping to support a meaningful gesture. But as Gilbert begins skipping work and draining their savings in pursuit of a distant dream, Lisa’s patience wears thin and she ultimately leaves him, choosing a steadier path over an all-consuming search.
Gilbert’s coworker Jane Mortimer, Catherine Hicks, a winsome and hopeful actress, enters the story and gradually forges a romance with him. Yet their budding connection rides atop a quest that grows more frantic by the day, as Gilbert refuses to abandon the pursuit of a famous woman who seems to remain beyond reach.
A lead then sends them to Angelo Dokakis, Howard Da Silva, an aging paparazzo who had previously photographed Garbo and who knows her habits and routines. Despite his experience, they spend days staking out her apartment without success, leaving them with more questions than answers.
Another clue points to Elizabeth Rennick, Hermione Gingold, an elderly actress who once shared a connection with Garbo. Rennick suggests looking for Garbo at a flea market, a place where memories and rumors mingle and where a real lead might surface.
With time running short, Gilbert finally encounters Garbo at the flea market and explains his mother’s condition to her. Garbo’s response is quiet and powerful, and she does not speak, yet her decision to visit Estelle at the hospital communicates a profound, wordless solidarity.
After the meeting, Gilbert feels a sense of closure: Estelle’s wish has been fulfilled, and she passes away soon after. The next day, he quits his job, delivering a pointed rebuke to his boss as he walks away from the office.
As he and Jane stroll through a park, a surprising sight interrupts their moment—Garbo herself approaches. Jane, stunned and awed, watches Garbo pause to greet Gilbert, a final scene that suggests a quiet blessing on a journey defined by devotion, memory, and the quiet power of a once-distant dream fulfilled.
