Josie, Pat Shortt, is a good-natured man with learning difficulties who lives and works at a garage in a small rural Irish village. The owner, Mr. Gallagher, played by John Keogh, is a former schoolmate who isn’t invested in the garage and is only waiting for the right offer from developers so he can sell. For Josie, one day rolls into another with nothing but his menial job and a few pints in the local pub, even though the regulars mock him and his ways. His only other companion is a large horse tethered alone in a field, to whom he talks and brings food, a quiet relationship that frames his simple world.

One day his boss hires his girlfriend’s 15-year-old son, Conor Ryan as David, to help Josie. Slowly Josie connects with David as they endure the slow and methodical pace of the garage. One night after work, Josie innocently shares some beers with David, and they sit and watch the sunset at the rear of the garage. Josie joins David and other local teenagers down by the railway tracks, bringing beer for everyone. The new social circle lifts his confidence and opens up a world he hadn’t fully explored before. At the local pub, he gathers the courage to dance with Carmel, Anne-Marie Duff, the local shopkeeper, but she makes his feelings clear with blunt honesty, saying she isn’t attracted to him.

The friendship between Josie and David grows until one fateful day after work. Josie shows David a pornographic film he received from a trucker who frequents the petrol station. David feels uncomfortable and leaves. Josie, sensing something is wrong, follows him outside but struggles to clarify what’s happening.

David returns the following week but does not stay after work. Instead, he leaves with Declan, a local boy who openly mocks and despises Josie because he is different. Nevertheless, Josie offers Declan a beer and a cheerful goodbye. Declan is portrayed by Tommy Fitzgerald in the cast, and his behavior casts a harsh shadow over Josie’s fragile confidence.

The next day, the local Garda come to the garage and take Josie to the police station because there has been “a complaint.” It transpires that David told Declan about the previous weekend’s incident and word reached David’s mother that Josie had supplied her son with alcohol and shown him pornography. After an interview with a sympathetic officer, Josie explains it was just a bit of “craic” and “pure innocent.” No charges are brought and he is released, but he is told to stay away from the town and especially to avoid contact with David. He returns to the garage, silent and shaken.

Back at home, Josie cannot shake the impact of what happened. While eating dinner, he realises what has unfolded and sits with a heavy, lingering sense of loss. Shocked, he places his head in his hands, alone in his small room at the back of the garage, a solitary moment that hints at a larger loneliness beneath his gentle exterior. The next morning, John Keogh makes a quiet, unspoken appearance as the events unfold around the business, underscoring the toll on Josie’s life and the uncertain future of the garage he calls his world.

In the film’s closing beats, the lonely horse that had been tethered in the field has been freed. It stops and looks directly into the camera as the screen fades to black, leaving a stark, quiet image of freedom and the unresolved ache in Josie’s life.
