Swapna [Taapsee Pannu] is a talented game designer who lives with a lingering fear of darkness and a heavy burden of post-traumatic stress. Her condition, often described as an anniversary reaction, intensifies around the memory of a brutal assault she endured in a dark room on New Year’s Eve. The film traces how that single night continues to shadow her life, shaping her relationships and choices as she tries to rebuild a sense of safety.

Her world is small and tightly controlled. Swapna’s parents hold a traditional view of what a “decent” girl should do, including notions about tattoos and late-night outings, and their judgment only widens the distance between them and their daughter. After the rape, they place blame squarely on Swapna, a response that cracks any remaining ties and drives her to live in isolation with Kalamma [Vinodhini Vaidyanathan], the loyal housemaid who keeps watch and provides practical care. Swapna finds sanctuary in her work and her passion for gaming, which becomes both a shield and a lens through which she processes pain.

A crucial thread in the narrative is Swapna’s tattoo—a life-sized, game-themed design on her wrist. When she confides in Varsha [Ramya Subramanian], the tattoo artist she trusts, Varsha reveals a chilling truth: the ink was created with the ashes of a stranger by mistake, a detail she had tried to disclose to Swapna previously but could not reach her about again. Varsha apologizes and explains that the tattoo is not a direct cause of Swapna’s pain, yet the revelation deepens Swapna’s sense of violation and darkens the emotional weight of the mark. Swapna decides to erase the tattoo with laser treatment, but the stinging sensation lingers and complicates the procedure, amplifying her distress rather than alleviating it.

In a city cafe, Swapna’s sense of security is shattered anew when she realizes two men are watching a video of her rape. The film’s mood shifts from intimate interiority to the public, invasive exposure of trauma, as the video goes viral and engulfs her in grief and despair. Overwhelmed, she attempts self-harm in a desperate bid to escape the pain, but Kalamma intervenes and saves her. The ensuing therapy session—led by a psychiatrist—a formal acknowledgment of the trauma and its reach into daily life—brings the painful truth into daylight. Kalamma informs Swapna that her parents are planning to visit, a looming confrontation Swapna dreads.

The emotional pressure culminates when Swapna’s fear crashes into a desperate act: she jumps from a balcony in a panic, only to survive with severe injuries that confine her to a wheelchair. Weeks pass, and New Year’s Eve arrives with a new turn of support. Dr Reena [Maala Parvathi], a compassionate physician, arrives with her colleague Varsha and offers a personal connection to the killer’s memory through Amutha, Dr Reena’s daughter and a three-time cancer survivor who became a voice for other patients. Amutha’s memory lives on in a symbolic tattoo crafted with her ashes, a piece that Reena wears to honor her daughter. This shared legacy and the assurance that Amutha’s spirit remains with Swapna in some form helps Swapna lean toward resilience rather than retreat. Dr Reena’s presence lends emotional weight to Swapna’s resolve and reframes the tattoo as a reminder to fight, not just survive.

With this renewed sense of purpose, Swapna considers reuniting with her parents, a step that Kalamma warmly welcomes. Yet the killer’s reign of terror re-enters Swapna’s life, striking with precision. He targets Swapna, killing the security guard and Kalamma, and the unsettling moment reveals three identical tattoos on Swapna’s wrist—hinting at a larger, more ominous pattern. Swapna awakens from a nightmare to find the headless body of the guard outside, and fear intensifies as she anticipates another assault. She calls the police and tries to fortify her home, only for an outsider to set the room on fire, forcing her and Kalamma to confront an unseen foe from within.

The breaking point comes when the killer enters their living room and Kalamma is killed, though two officers who arrive also lose their lives in the confrontation. The killer appears to vanish, and Swapna glimpses a disturbing sight in the rear-view mirror: three killers, one of them with the head of the officer she glimpsed in the reflection, waving at her from within the burning vehicle. The car eventually explodes, sealing a horrifying chapter in Swapna’s life as the night seems to swallow her whole.

Yet the story does not end in despair. Swapna awakens again, only one tattoo remaining on her wrist, and she refuses to switch on the light in an act of defiant control over her fear. With Kalamma’s steadiness by her side, she begins to enact a counter-attack rather than a surrender. She and Kalamma devise a plan that leverages darkness as a tactical advantage, turning the power off to confuse the killers and draw them into a trap. A brave, collaborative effort follows: they burn one killer outside Swapna’s room to death, and Kalamma distracts another by injuring him in the foot, allowing Swapna to use a broken piece of glass to stab the assailant in the neck. The risk escalates as a third killer on the terrace moves toward Swapna, but Kalamma’s quick thinking buys precious moments. Swapna then drags herself back toward safety and manages to reach her room, where the final confrontation unfolds. The killer records Swapna with a video camera while threatening her with a machete, but she fights back and stabs him with the broken glass, killing him as the police arrive and backup closes in.

With all three killers defeated and Kalamma alive, Swapna experiences a flood of emotions as fireworks light the sky for the new year. She has weathered a brutal season of fear and loss, but the enforced quiet of a single tattoo now stands as a symbol of resilience rather than a trigger of trauma. In a climactic moment of resolve, Swapna chooses not to surrender to darkness again; she and Kalamma have reclaimed agency in a harrowing, suffocating night and emerge with a renewed commitment to life, memory, and the fight to stay alive.
