Gambling Lady

Mike Lee raises Lady Lee to be as honest a gambler as he is. When his debts to the underworld become unbearable, he chooses suicide rather than run a crooked game. His death sets Lady on a perilous path into a world of gamblers and organized crime she will have to navigate.

Lady initially goes to work for Jim Fallin's syndicate, learning the rules of the underworld. When Fallin tries to fix games by providing a crooked dealer, she quits and decides to make her own way. She chooses independence over submission to the syndicate.

Garry Madison becomes a devoted suitor, winning Lady's affection. His visit to the illegal gambling den coincides with two policemen in disguise, exposing the den to law enforcement and increasing the danger around Lady.

Peter, Garry's father, disapproves of the match and tries to buy Lady off with money. She refuses the money, but the confrontation leaves her torn about Garry and the life ahead. The pressure reveals the old gambler's protective but misguided instincts.

With the matter unresolved, Peter offers to cut cards for his son's future. He draws a jack, and Lady draws a queen, a result that seals Garry and Lady's marriage and settles the dispute with a high-stakes flourish.

Garry's old flame Sheila Aiken returns from Europe, rekindling tension. Lady challenges Sheila to a game of cards and wins Sheila's jewelry, signaling that trust will be tested in the days ahead.

Charlie Lang is arrested, and Garry refuses Lady's request for $10,000 to bail him out. To raise the money, Lady pawns Sheila's jewels, drawing herself further into perilous entanglements with the syndicate and Charlie.

Charlie offers to reimburse Lady, intending to pressure the syndicate into paying for his silence about what he knows. The criminal web tightens as loyalties shift and secrets deepen.

The newspapers expose Lady's involvement with Charlie, fueling Garry's anger. He goes to recover the pawn ticket and disappears for the night, leaving Lady anxious and suspicious.

The next day two policemen inform Lady that Garry has been arrested for Charlie's murder, found in possession of the pawn ticket. She suspects that Garry spent the night with Sheila but refuses to use that as his alibi.

Sheila insists she will testify only if Lady divorces Garry and pays $250,000 in alimony. Lady agrees to her terms, precipitating the divorce proceedings that will test her loyalty and resolve.

Garry is released and the divorce is granted, but initial doubts fade as Peter and Garry realize Lady wasn't in it for money. Lady tears up the check, affirming her integrity, and Garry reconciles with her after Sheila is tricked into admitting the truth.
