During the 1947 Partition of India, as communities flee across newly formed borders, the story follows a Sikh trucker named Tara Singh [Sunny Deol] who begins by joining Hindu and Sikh mobs in attacking Muslim refugees. Yet a pivotal moment alters his path: he protects Sakina Ali [Ameesha Patel] from a violent crowd after recognizing her from college days. To shield her identity, he darkens her forehead with blood, a stark symbol that marks her as his wartime Sikh wife in the eyes of a world tearing itself apart.

The film then shifts back to pre-Partition Lahore, where Tara delivers supplies to a college Sakina attends. Though his working-class background initially invites mockery from Sakina’s friends, Tara’s genuine talent shines through when he sings, earning her admiration and the respect of those who doubted him. Sakina is moved by his sincerity and persuades him to perform at a college function, setting the stage for a bond that grows stronger with each shared moment. As a parting gift on her graduation, Tara gives Sakina a miniature Taj Mahal, a tender keepsake that underlines their budding affection amid growing tension in a city on the brink of upheaval.

When Partition erupts, Tara’s family attempts to migrate to India but is cut down by a retaliatory mob. In the wake of this tragedy, Tara descends into cycles of violence, choosing to fight back in vengeance. Yet in the present timeline, he finds Sakina alive and sheltered, convinced that her family has perished. As their relationship deepens, she decides to leave for a refugee camp to spare him the burden of her past, only to return when she realizes her true feelings for him. The couple marries and soon welcome a son, Charanjeet [Utkarsh Sharma], affectionately known as Jeete.

Years pass, and Sakina learns that her family is alive in Lahore, where her father Ashraf Ali [Amrish Puri] holds the position of mayor. Visa restrictions force Sakina to travel solo to reunite with them, with a plan to come back. However, her family resists the idea of the marriage and arranges for her to wed another Muslim man. Sakina makes clear her wish to return to India with her son, even as the walls of separation loom larger.

Determined to bring her home, Tara crosses the border illegally with Jeete and Darmiyaan [Vivek Shauq], locating Sakina and interrupting her forced marriage. Ashraf Ali agrees to their reunion, but only on the condition that Tara renounces his Indian roots and converts to Islam to settle in Pakistan. In a tense public gathering, Tara accepts the terms but refuses to renounce India, sparking a violent confrontation that tests the strength of their love.

The family escapes and seeks refuge in a cottage near the border. When their location is betrayed, Ashraf Ali and his men pursue them. Tara, Sakina, Charanjeet, and Darmiyaan attempt a last-ditch escape by train to India, but they are intercepted. In the ensuing clash, Sakina is shot and slips into a coma. After waking, she reunites with Tara and Charanjeet, their bond proven unbreakable by hardship and danger.

Witnessing the depth of their devotion, Ashraf Ali experiences a change of heart and accepts Tara as his son-in-law. The family’s journey culminates in a hard-won return to India, where they are finally reunited and hopeful for a future built on mutual respect, resilience, and the enduring power of love across borders.
