Mason Pettits, a former U.S. Army Special Forces operator, found his life irrevocably altered after a poorly executed assassination attempt on the dictator of Paldonia, Juan Venegas. Medically discharged and left to navigate a mundane existence at a law firm years later, Mason discovers a flicker of hope when his old comrade, Sebastian Earle, presents him with a tantalizing opportunity: a private security job that promises financial reward. This new position entails safeguarding the embattled journalist Claire Wellington, who has garnered an invitation from Venegas amidst an escalating insurrection against his regime. As Mason prepares for the assignment, he faces the mounting anxiety of his wife, Jenny, who harbors fears for their daughter Casey and worries that Mason might not return if the mission takes a dangerous turn.
Upon their arrival in Paldonia, the situation quickly deteriorates when Mason, Claire, and Venegas come under siege by anti-Venegas militants. Their vehicles are destroyed, plunging the trio into a desperate escape into the dense jungle. It soon becomes evident that the attackers were not mere rebels but Venegas’s own soldiers, betraying him under the leadership of his conniving nephew, Jorge, and military advisor, Colonel Jan Koehorst. Despite his instincts advising otherwise, Mason attempts to sever ties with Venegas, but fate intervenes when mercenaries ambush him and Claire once more. In a harrowing battle, with Venegas’s assistance, they manage to evade further danger and seek refuge in a village where Venegas is surprisingly venerated.
During their stay, Claire diligently records her interview with Venegas, while Mason struggles with his burgeoning connection to her, still haunted by memories of his family. Venegas hints at ulterior motives, and as Mason delves deeper into the scenario, he learns from Sebastian that his true assignment was, in fact, to eliminate Venegas. As tensions rise with Jan’s forces capturing Claire during a siege of the village, Mason, driven by loyalty and a sense of justice, teams up with Venegas to flee.
Their journey to the capital unveils even greater revelations. Venegas insists he wasn’t responsible for the deaths of Mason’s comrades. Together, they execute a plan to exchange Claire for safe passage, exposing the farce of the supposed revolution and revealing Venegas’s surprising popularity among his people. During the exchange, Venegas distracts Jan’s forces with the ruse of fake protesters, buying them critical time to escape to the presidential palace. In a twist of fate, Venegas attempts to persuade Jorge to reconsider the nation’s future, yet tragedy strikes when General Martínez, another conspirator, murders Jorge.
As Jan’s forces launch an assault on the palace, an intense shootout ensues, leading to a fateful confrontation between Mason and Jan. The truth comes to light when Jan admits to being responsible for the deaths of Mason’s friends, igniting a fire within Mason that drives him to vanquish his enemy. With Claire capturing the chaos on video, her efforts ultimately pay off as Sebastian’s team arrives just in time to neutralize Jan’s militants.
In the aftermath of the explosive events in Paldonia, Claire’s career receives a significant boost thanks to the footage she captured. Venegas, recognizing the need for change, steps down gracefully, opening the door for democratic elections. As peace returns to the war-torn nation, Mason reunites with his family and receives a generous $5 million from Venegas, allowing him to shed the chains of his dismal job and embrace a new chapter in his life.
