In the film “Freedom,” the story centers around a charismatic and charming criminal, Bruno Sulak, who is based on a real-life figure known as the ‘gentleman robber.’ Throughout the movie, Bruno is portrayed as a lover and a loyal friend, often engaging in stylish, non-violent jewelry heists with his crew. Despite his criminal activities, he maintains a code of honor and refuses to resort to violence, which makes him somewhat of an anti-hero.

As the film progresses, Bruno’s rebellious attitude and constant teasing of authority figures, especially police officer George Moreas, eventually lead to his downfall. Despite numerous escapes and moments of camaraderie with his law enforcement pursuer, Bruno’s disdain for the system and desire for freedom keep him from truly settling down. He dreams of leaving behind his life of crime and starting anew with his love, Annie. However, this dream is short-lived, and ultimately, his attempts to escape across the border are thwarted by careful police efforts.

The ending reveals that Bruno’s defiance and refusal to accept confinement ultimately lead to his death. After a final confrontation with Moreas, Bruno is caught once more and returned to prison. The film hints at a conspiracy surrounding his death, especially with the suspicious death of Steve, a new associate. The final scenes are poignant, with Annie reading Bruno’s last letter from prison, where he expresses love and hope for their future together, knowing his time is ending. Bruno’s character leaves a lasting impression as a rebellious spirit who refuses to be caged, embodying the story of a man who fought against the system until his tragic but inevitable end.
