The story begins with Manco, a skilled bounty hunter who is on a mission. He is on the trail of El Indio, a notorious bank robber who has just escaped from prison.

Colonel Douglas Mortimer, a former army officer, arrives in town around the same time as Manco. He engages in a standoff with a hunchback named Wild, establishing the tension that underpins their motivations.

Indio is shown violently killing the family of the man who previously captured him, showcasing his brutal nature. This event sets the tone for the escalating violence that follows, as Indio seeks revenge.

Mortimer convinces Manco to join forces, aiming to infiltrate Indio's gang. They hatch a plan that involves freeing one of Indio's imprisoned friends to gain Indio's trust.

Indio orders Manco and his gang to rob a nearby bank in Santa Cruz. However, Manco has a hidden agenda, leading to a deadly confrontation among the gang members.

In a turn of events, Manco betrays his fellow gang members by killing them. He cleverly sends a false telegram to the sheriff in El Paso, securing his position within the gang.

The gang attempts to rob the Bank of El Paso, which is rumored to contain nearly a million dollars. Despite their efforts, they leave empty-handed after failing to open the safe.

The gang relocates to Agua Caliente, where Mortimer has set a trap for Indio's gang. A fierce battle ensues, resulting in the death of Wild during the confrontation.

Indio mistakenly trusts Mortimer with the safe, believing he can open it without destroying it. However, the tension between the bounty hunters and the gang begins to mount.

Manco and Mortimer are captured by Indio's gang and beaten. However, Groggy, one of the gang members, senses the betrayal and the situation becomes increasingly dangerous for all involved.

In a climactic face-off, Mortimer reveals his true identity to Indio. This revelation leads to a tense duel where Mortimer confronts Indio, using the haunting melody of the pocket watch.
