As 13-year-old Amy Alden (Anna Paquin) navigates the emotional turmoil following a tragic car accident that claimed her mother, Aliane, she is uprooted from her home in New Zealand to live with her estranged father, Thomas Alden (Jeff Daniels), a sculptor and inventor, in Ontario, Canada. Each day presents new challenges as Amy struggles to adapt to her unfamiliar environment alongside Thomas and his girlfriend Susan.

The situation takes a turn when a construction crew disrupts a small wilderness area near their residence, leading Amy to stumble upon an abandoned clutch of 16 goose eggs. Ignoring the potential consequences and without consulting Thomas, Susan, or her uncle David (David Hemblen), she decides to nurture the eggs in a dresser within her father’s old barn. As they hatch, Amy is overjoyed to become an unexpected mother to a brood of goslings. However, her initial excitement soon transforms into a sense of responsibility as she grapples with the demands of her new role.

Observing Amy’s growing attachment to the geese, Thomas seeks advice from local Animal Regulation officer Glen Seifert (Jeremy Ratchford), who informs them that the goslings have imprinted on Amy as their mother. He further explains the implications of a local ordinance requiring that domestic geese have their wings clipped to prevent flight. When a demonstration of this clipping process disturbs Amy, tension escalates, leading Thomas to dismiss Seifert from their property.

Determined to help the geese embrace their natural instincts, Thomas constructs an ultralight aircraft designed to guide them on their migratory journey. However, he soon discovers that the geese will only follow Amy. With guidance from his friend Barry and encouragement from Thomas, Amy learns to pilot her own ultralight.

Meanwhile, David facilitates arrangements for the geese to be relocated to a bird sanctuary in North Carolina, but they must make the journey before November 1st, as the sanctuary faces impending demolition due to development plans. As the deadline looms, Amy and Thomas are faced with a significant hurdle.

During their preparations, Igor, the weakest of the geese who struggles with a limp, collides with Amy’s aircraft, forcing her to make an emergency landing in a remote forest. Soon after, Glen Seifert returns to confiscate the remaining goslings. In a moment of defiance, the Aldens resolve to liberate the birds.

With Igor unable to fly, Amy bravely secures him in her cockpit and sets out on a risky journey to guide the geese to their new sanctuary. Facing turbulent skies and treacherous landscapes, both Amy and Thomas confront their fears and insecurities in a race against time.

Their adventure leads them to an unexpected landing at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, capturing the attention of the local community and transforming them into overnight sensations. As they bask in newfound fame, an intriguing elderly woman, driven by a passion for wildlife conservation, offers them shelter for the evening, creating an environment of warmth and curiosity. Here, amidst cozy conversations, Amy finds the courage to ask Thomas about his past, culminating in an emotional revelation that reveals layers of their relationship strained by a decade of longing and regret.

As the night deepens, the repercussions of their emergency landing manifest. Thomas’s aircraft sustains significant damage, compelling him to seek assistance on foot, while Amy deftly continues the voyage to the sanctuary. With unwavering resolve, she pushes ahead, ultimately reaching the sanctuary, where the reunion with the goslings ignites joy within the community and her family — a touching reminder of nature’s wonders.
