In the aftermath of the earthquake, seven utility workers tragically die in a storm drain at MacArthur Park. Despite city officials downplaying the incident as an accident, Roark is suspicious and feels the need to investigate further.

Roark and his associate Gator Harris investigate the storm sewer where the utility workers died. They narrowly escape when a dangerous surge of hot gases threatens their lives, further intensifying their resolve to uncover the truth.

Geologist Dr. Amy Barnes warns Roark about a potentially emerging volcanic threat beneath the city. However, her struggle to provide conclusive evidence prevents immediate action from being taken.

Dr. Barnes and her assistant Rachel return to the site of the deadly incident to conduct further examinations. They discover a dangerous fissure, but another massive earthquake strikes, leading to Rachel's tragic fall into the crack.

Smoke and lava erupt near the La Brea Tar Pits, causing chaos as explosions propel steel grates into the air. This incident leads to a subway train derailing underground, escalating the city’s emergency situation.

Amidst the chaos, Roark and his daughter are caught in the disaster when she gets injured and is rushed to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Roark becomes increasingly desperate to protect his daughter while facing the city's burgeoning crisis.

In a critical move, Roark and Dr. Barnes devise a plan to build a barrier at Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue to contain the advancing lava flow. Their strategy involves helicopters dumping water to create a protective crust around the lava.

As Dr. Barnes continues to analyze geological data, she predicts that the magma is advancing beneath a subway tunnel. This alarming discovery heightens the urgency to take action and protect surrounding areas, particularly the Beverly Center.

Olber leads a high-risk underground rescue mission following the subway derailment. While he successfully saves all the passengers on board, he tragically loses his life while attempting to rescue the conductor from the approaching lava.

Under Roark's guidance, city authorities use explosives to create channels in the streets to redirect the lava towards Ballona Creek. This strategic maneuver aims to prevent the lava from further encroaching upon the city.

Dr. Barnes realizes that the street's incline is incorrect for redirecting the lava successfully. This critical information prompts Roark to implement a bold plan to demolish a construction site to prevent the disaster from worsening.

In a heroic moment, Gator sacrifices himself to save a fellow officer who is trapped amidst the wreckage. His ultimate sacrifice enables the final explosive charges to go off, successfully diverting the lava and averting a catastrophe.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of Roark, Dr. Barnes, and their team, the lava is finally redirected toward the Pacific Ocean. This successful operation ensures the safety of Los Angeles, preventing a disastrous eruption in the city.
