In the arid Karoo, the shy and innocent Natalie Jonkers, Nicole Fortuin marries the young policeman Sgt. Bakkies Bezhuidenhout, De Klerk Oelofse, a man whose inexperience matches her own. His awkward, almost hesitant attempt at consummation leaves her rattled, and she seizes his revolver and runs to her beloved horse, tethered near the pastor’s house. When the pastor, Reverend Salmon, orders her back, she shoots him dead and races away into the desert.

Seeking help, she calls on her heavily pregnant friend Poppie, Izel Bezuidenhout, and together they set out to find Branco, Clayton Evertson, the trucker who is the father of the coming child.

Meanwhile, Capt. Beauty Cuba, Faith Baloyi, drives up from Cape Town into the desert to confront her husband Billy, Brendon Daniels, who is serving fifteen years for murdering his brother and is suspected of breaking out to kill the pastor. Beauty quickly discovers that the suspicion is unfounded, but Billy appears to want another sentence altogether.

After Natalie and Poppie locate Branco at a roadside bar run by Theunis, Albert Pretorius Theunis, the four decide to head for Johannesburg. A snow-blocked road tests their plan: Branco seduces Natalie, who responds to his practiced approach, while Theunis tries to rape Poppie. Beauty, who has trailed them, intervenes and stops Theunis at gunpoint, taking the two women into custody.

Beauty makes a deal with local police: she will hand Natalie, the one who panicked and killed the pastor, to them, and in exchange they will deliver Billy into her custody. Natalie is restored to her ungrateful husband, Poppie’s labor begins, and in the end Billy agrees to escape across the frontier with Beauty to start a new life.
