Choi Bae-dal, at the tail end of World War II, dreams of piloting fighter planes. He makes a desperate choice to flee Korea and stow away to Japan to join their air force. The plan is fraught with danger, but it sets him on a path filled with chance and risk.

On the way to the air force training camp, Bae-dal encounters Chun-bae, a sly fellow Korean who survives by petty crime. They hide together in a truck bound for the camp, forming a tense, uneasy alliance. The bond will shape both of their fates as they chase a common dream and dodge danger.

At the air force training camp, the pompous commander Kato treats the newcomers with contempt. He offers a brutal bargain: if Bae-dal can beat him using his awkward Taekkyon, the two Koreans will be released. Bae-dal accepts the challenge, fueling his drive with humiliation and resolve.

Emerging from the mountains, he adopts the Japanese name Masutatsu Oyama and sets out to challenge the best fighters Japan has to offer. He trains with the same rugged gi and a primal presence, signaling a bold new chapter in his life. His ambition shifts from revenge to mastery and greatness.

Oyama defeats opponents across karate, judo, ninjutsu, aikido, and kobudo, turning his ascent into a national sensation. The media buzz draws attention from the leadership of the Japan Karate Association, which clashes with his unorthodox approach. The Japan Karate Association dispatches a killer to silence Oyama, but the hit ends when he learns the dead man left a wife and child.
