Mal drives home drunk and loses control, striking a young boy on a bike with his side-view mirror. He calls an ambulance but denies any involvement, sowing seeds of guilt and cover-up. Jim and Carl arrive at the scene, and Carl recognizes Mal, deepening the investigation.

In the final scene, Mal and Julie take their children to school. Jim stands nearby with two cups of coffee, suggesting that Mal is about to become Jim’s new partner. The ending leaves a complex note of reluctant camaraderie and moral compromise between two officers.
