Father and Scout

Spencer is a neurotic, sarcastic writer from Los Angeles who initially resists outdoor activities and often mocks the camping trip. He cares for Michael but tends to mask his paternal insecurity with humor. Over the weekend he loosens up, participates in activities, and learns to put his son's needs first, culminating in a rescue that proves his courage.

Donna is a practical, supportive mother who admires Spencer’s bond with Michael but pushes for more traditional, outdoor father–son bonding. She believes in active, manly adventures and, while she wants him to grow, she supports his effort to try something new for their family.

Michael is a sixth-grade student who wants his dad to join in a dad-and-lad camping trip. He is hopeful, observant, and eager to explore outdoors, including an interest in scuba diving. He handles embarrassment gracefully while encouraging his father to become more involved.

Aaron is a clumsy but good-natured film editor who befriends Spencer during the trip. He shares Spencer’s reluctance to hike but remains supportive and becomes a steady ally in keeping the weekend from falling apart.

Brent is Aaron’s disillusioned, outspoken son who often challenges the camping trip's dynamics with blunt honesty and a brash attitude.

Chet is a gruff, arrogant former Marine who clashes with Spencer and imposes a harsh, competitive attitude on the weekend. He cares deeply about his son Chip and is quick to challenge others, making him the weekend’s primary antagonist.

Chip is Chet’s bratty, spoiled son who embodies the bratty attitude that challenges the adults. He competes in the events and contributes to the tension on the trip.

The Scoutmaster leads the camping trip and keeps the group on track, balancing instruction with a sense of fun. He facilitates lessons about bonding and recognizes moments of bravery and growth among the fathers and sons.
