Eyes of a Stranger

Jane, a Miami newscaster, reports on the latest serial killer victim and uses her platform to urge caution and catch the killer. She lives with her teenage sister Tracy, who is blind and deaf-mute due to a conversion disorder from a past kidnapping and rape. Jane harbors guilt about leaving Tracy alone before the attack.

Debbie, a waitress, receives threatening calls at her home. The police plan to send an investigator the following morning. The killer Stanley Herbert ambushes them: he decapitates Debbie's boyfriend Jeff, then rapes and strangles Debbie.

While parking in the garage of her apartment complex, Jane observes Stanley returning in his own car and disposing of a blood-stained shirt and belt. The sighting convinces her that he is connected to the killings.

Jane asks building management to identify the man whose car she damaged. She learns he lives in the apartment tower directly across from hers.

Jane tells her attorney boyfriend David about what she saw. David warns that the evidence is circumstantial and not conclusive.

Annette, a local secretary, receives threatening calls from Stanley while alone in her office. She leaves her office and is murdered by Stanley in her car, and he disposes of her body in a gravel pit. Stanley then kills a couple parked nearby.

After the murders, Jane notices that Stanley's car wheels are mud-covered when she spots him returning home. The next morning she learns that three corpses are found in the gravel pit and that his car has been washed.

Jane interviews the friend Annette had called before her death for a special news report. The friend mentions hearing strange music playing in the background of the harassing calls.

Jane steals the keys to Stanley's apartment and enters. She finds mud-covered shoes in his closet and a cuckoo clock that she suspects is the source of the music. Stanley returns while she is inside, forcing her to escape by climbing to the apartment below.

Jane calls Stanley and taunts him, calling him a phone freak. Unnerved, Stanley leaves his apartment and goes to a strip club, where he murders a dancer.

The next day, during a special report, Jane describes the culprit as a phone freak. Stanley watches the broadcast from his own home and realizes Jane is the one who exposed him. He then begins to watch Jane's apartment and spots Tracy on the balcony.

That night, Jane sneaks into Stanley's apartment again while he appears to be away and discovers that the cuckoo clock's melody matches the music described by Annette's friend. Unknown to her, Stanley has infiltrated her own apartment as well. He torments Tracy by moving objects out of her reach.

Stanley attacks Tracy in her apartment, attempting to strangle her. Tracy's relived trauma begins to restore her senses, and she fights him off.

Tracy finds Jane's revolver and shoots Stanley in the abdomen. Thinking he is dead, she drops the gun and tries to hide, but Stanley regains the attack and Jane arrives to shoot him through the head, ending the threat.

Stanley's body lies in the bathtub, covered in glass and blood. Tracy calls Jane's name, and the sisters embrace, having survived the ordeal and repaired their bond.
