Tanner’s journey in Exposure is about confronting his deepest fears and coming to terms with his trauma. Throughout the film, we see that his paranoia and anxiety stem from a harrowing kidnapping experience, made worse by his trust issues and trauma responses. From the beginning, Tanner is convinced there is a threat lurking, which leads him to be constantly on edge, sealing himself off from the world and preparing for danger. His therapy sessions and exposure attempts are initially about gradual confrontation, like facing his kidnapper’s mugshot or revisiting the site of his trauma. These moments serve as steps toward reclaiming control over his fears.

However, the plot takes a dark turn when Tanner discovers that the man he believed was his kidnapper, Oscar Bomb, was actually an actor hired by Nicole to fake the threat and help him recover. This revelation shatters Tanner’s sense of reality, making him question what was real and what was fabricated. Nicole’s lie was meant to protect him, but it ultimately left Tanner feeling manipulated and more paranoid, especially when he learns that the real perpetrator is still alive and nearby. His paranoia worsens as he prepares for a confrontation, even pointing his shotgun at Nicole when he believes she’s hiding the truth.

The climax occurs when Tanner, driven by his desire for closure, tracks down the man who was actually involved in his kidnapping—an addict suffering from paranoia and hallucinations. When finally confronted, the addict’s fragile mental state reveals that he was high on meth and entirely disconnected from reality. In a surprising twist, Tanner chooses to forgive him rather than exact revenge, recognizing that the same paranoia that torment him also consumes the addict. Despite the pain inflicted on him, Tanner decides to release the man, understanding that hatred and revenge won’t heal his wounds.

In the end, Tanner realizes that true healing isn’t about erasing his fear completely, but about accepting that trauma is complex and imperfect. He chooses to leave Nicole and face his own mental health struggles alone, believing that he needs this solitary journey to truly recover. Nicole, exhausted from her efforts to support him, agrees that they need time apart—so Tanner can work on his mind without external pressures. The film closes with Tanner walking into an uncertain future, embracing his vulnerability and the uncertainty that trauma leaves behind, symbolizing that healing is a continuous process that requires facing the uncomfortable truths within himself.
