The story unfolds on the vast Eurasian Steppes, where Vera Polina Agureeva lives with her husband Valery and their daughter in a house on the outskirts; at a wedding she meets Pavel Maksim Ushakov, and the attraction between them is immediate, even as a prior quarrel between Pavel and a friend colors the moment with tension. The film probes a moment when words fail to bridge the gap between desire and consequence, and a moment of quiet becomes the spark that pushes everyone toward a irreversible path.
A family crisis interrupts the fragile ache between Vera and Pavel. A domestic dog bites Vera’s daughter, a panic spreads through the house, and Valery reacts with a brutal, almost ceremonial response: he cuts off the finger, offers vodka to steady his own nerves, and kills the dog. That night, Vera goes to the steppe to bury the animal, and there she encounters Pavel once more; together they place the dead creature in the earth and begin to confront the pull between loyalty and longing.
Back home, Vera learns that her daughter’s condition has worsened. Neighbors carry the child to the nearest hospital while Valery remains asleep, drunk on vodka. Vera and Valery rush to the riverbank, where they spot Pavel’s motorboat and Pavel’s quiet readiness to help. He agrees to carry them along the waterway to the hospital. On the voyage, Valery notices Vera’s muddy dress and, in a sudden moment of anger, strikes her against the side of the boat. Pavel immediately halts the craft, ejects Valery onto the shore, and Vera and Pavel steer the boat away together.
Valery returns home, fuels anger with alcohol, and arms himself with a rifle and ammunition. He sets the hut on fire and heads out to find them, while Vera and Pavel grow closer, shifting from distant attraction to a dangerous, consuming affair. In the hospital, they discover that Vera’s daughter is nowhere to be found; the neighbors have already brought her back home. Pavel offers Vera a chance to take her daughter and live with him, but the road ahead remains perilous.
Valery, still consumed by drink, tests his cold capacity for violence by killing a cow on the field, and then waits by the river for Pavel’s boat. When Vera and Pavel finally appear, the tension erupts into violence: Valery shoots Pavel multiple times and wounds Vera. Pavel, using his body as a shield, tries to protect Vera as they drift away in the blood-filled boat. The couple’s escape is doomed from the start—the boat takes on water and begins to sink, taking with it the shaken, living Vera as it sinks beneath the river’s depth, a stark end to a storm of desire, guilt, and retribution.
