Slim, a waitress in a Los Angeles diner, meets Mitch Hiller during a chance encounter that starts as a bet. They marry and have a daughter named Gracie, moving into an expensive house together. This marks the beginning of a life that looks glamorous from the outside.

Six years into their marriage, Slim believes she has built a stable life with Mitch and Gracie in a lavish LA home. Mitch's outward charm hides a controlling behavior that will soon corrode their happiness. The family appears to be thriving while trouble quietly brews.

Slim discovers that Mitch has been repeatedly cheating with little remorse. The revelation shatters the illusion of a perfect marriage and marks the start of a volatile, abusive dynamic. Slim begins to fear for her safety and that of Gracie.

When Slim threatens to leave, Mitch escalates violence, beating her and declaring that as the breadwinner he can do as he pleases. He warns that she will not end the affair without a fight. Slim realizes she must protect Gracie and herself.

Slim seeks help from Mitch's mother, who hints that Slim may have provoked his anger and mentions a history of abuse. Her best friend Ginny urges Slim to press charges and leave, but the authorities offer little aid. The lack of real support leaves Slim feeling cornered.

Slim plans to flee with Gracie, enlisting friends to help. Mitch confronts them, beating Slim again and threatening her friends at gunpoint. The standoff ends when Slim wakes Gracie and Mitch, unwilling to reveal his true nature in front of her, lets them go.

Mitch drains and freezes Slim's bank accounts, leaving her without funds to rent a room. Desperate, Slim escapes with Gracie and moves to Seattle to stay with her ex-boyfriend Joe. The life Slim hoped would protect her suddenly seems out of reach.

The next day, men posing as FBI agents threaten Joe and damage his apartment. Slim travels to seek help from her wealthy but estranged father Jupiter, hoping for protection and a fresh start. At first, Jupiter refuses, doubting his paternity and thinking Slim is after money.

Slim and Gracie briefly find refuge at a commune. Later Jupiter contacts Slim, explaining that Mitch's associates have threatened him as well and offering his help and resources. He sends a large sum of money, enabling her to set up a new life and identity.

Joe visits Slim in Michigan, but Mitch tracks her down with help from Robbie, a corrupt cop who had posed as the rude man in the staged confrontation. Slim narrowly escapes a brutal struggle in front of Gracie and then evades Robbie in a car chase. The threat to her safety continues to escalate.

Seeking a decisive plan, Slim goes into hiding in San Francisco and trains in Krav Maga. She enlists help from a woman who looks identical to her, creating a mirror image to aid in her plan. This marks a turning point in how she plans to confront Mitch.

Slim breaks into Mitch's new home, hides his guns, jams the phone, and leaves fake letters suggesting she wants to discuss custody of Gracie. When Mitch returns, a fight ensues and Slim knocks him unconscious before eventually pushing him off a balcony to his death. The police deem the killing a case of self defense.

With Mitch dead, Slim and Gracie reunite and move to Seattle to live with Joe. They begin rebuilding their lives with the promise of safety and a fresh start.
