Edward Scissorhands

An eccentric inventor creates Edward, an ageless humanoid with scissor blades for hands. The inventor dies of a heart attack before giving Edward hands, leaving him unfinished and isolated. Edward remains locked away in the mansion, unaware of the wider world.

Peg Boggs, a door-to-door Avon seller, visits the decrepit mansion and finds Edward living alone. She decides to bring him to her home to experience humanity. This act begins Edward's first exposure to people and emotions.

Peg introduces Edward to her husband Bill and their children, Kim and Kevin. Edward immediately falls in love with Kim, sensing a connection he cannot fully express. The family warms to him despite his odd appearance.

Neighbors gather for a barbecue to welcome the newcomer, and most people are curious and kind. Edward makes friends with several neighbors, while Esmeralda and Jim watch with suspicion. The event marks his tentative inclusion in the town.

Edward quietly helps by trimming hedges into topiaries, then expands to grooming dogs and styling hair. His careful, imaginative work wins over more neighbors. Yet his lack of social cues remains noticeable and misunderstood by some.

Joyce offers to help Edward open a neighborhood hair salon, encouraging his talents. She later tries to seduce him and falsely accuses him of forcing himself on her. The lie sows fear and distrust, undermining his growing standing in the community.

Edward's dream of opening a salon collapses when the bank refuses him a loan. The rejection reinforces his fragility in a world built on appearances and rumors. He remains unable to secure a place for his talent in town.

Jim convinces Edward to pick the lock on his parents' home so he can steal electronic goods to buy a van. Edward naively agrees, trusting Jim. When the burglar alarm triggers and the walls seal, Edward is trapped and eventually arrested.

Police determine that a lifetime of isolation has left Edward without common sense or morality, so he cannot be charged. He still takes responsibility for the burglary, telling Kim that he did it because she asked him to. The gesture earns him mixed sympathy and further shuns from others.

At Christmas, Edward carves an ice sculpture modeled after Kim, and snow-like shavings drift into the air. Kim dances in the snowfall, a rare moment of wonder for the town. Jim's jealousy and fear of Edward's influence begin to intensify.

Jim's drunken friend drives to Kim's house and nearly hits Kevin, but Edward pushes him to safety, inadvertently injuring Kevin. Witnesses accuse Edward of attacking Kevin, heightening fear around him. Edward fights back only when Jim assaults him and then flees to the inventor's mansion.

Kim seeks out Edward, and Jim follows with a gun. Edward avoids fighting until he sees Jim strike Kim, at which point he defends her by stabbing Jim and pushing him to his death. The moment seals the tragedy around their forbidden love.

Kim confesses her love and they share a kiss, acknowledging that their romance cannot be fulfilled in the world they inhabit. Neighbors recount the deaths as though Jim and Edward killed each other, allowing a painful, quiet ending to settle over the town.

The elderly Kim finishes the tale for her granddaughter, saying she never saw Edward again but believes he remains alive, as the snow continues to fall. Edward is seen carving ice sculptures of his memories, with snow drifting around them. The story ends with a hopeful note that their moment remains in winter's dance.
