What Happens at the End of Edge of the World?

How Edge of the World (2021) ends, what the final scene means, which earlier moments set it up and how to read the ending if the film leaves it open. The full ending explained, with every spoiler.

James Brooke’s decision to accept the role of Rajah of Sarawak was driven by his desire to bring positive change, such as ending slavery and reforming the tribes’ savage behaviors. Throughout his rule, he aimed to civilize and bring order to Sarawak, trying to stay true to his morals. However, his journey becomes complicated when Prince Makota returns, seeking revenge for his insult and aiming to take the throne for himself. In a savage act of vengeance, Makota kills James’s friends and family, including Crookshank and Badruddin, which deeply traumatizes James. This series of betrayals pushes James into a violent, almost primal state. In the final act, he makes a drastic choice: he kills Makota by ripping off his head, a brutal act that signifies how far he has fallen from his original ideals of civility and peace. After this violent act, James recognizes that he has become more like the savage ruler he despised. He then hands the crown to his cousin Charles, acknowledging that while Charles still retains innocence and moral clarity, James feels unworthy of leadership because of the brutality he has succumbed to. When he says, “You are the boy I used to be, Charlie,” it underscores that James sees himself as lost to the primal violence that now defines him. His death marks the end of his conflicted journey—a descent into savagery prompted by tragedy. The story leaves us with the image of a man who, in his attempt to bring order and morality, was ultimately consumed by the very violence and chaos he fought against. The ending suggests that sometimes, choices made in desperation or rage can irrevocably change who we are, turning heroes into tragic figures.
