Still wondering what the ending of Eden (2020) really means? Here’s a spoiler-heavy breakdown of the final scene, major twists, and the deeper themes that shape the film’s conclusion.
In the closing moments of Eden, the fragile experiment on Floreana collapses. After months of tension and rivalry, Dore—disillusioned by Friedrich’s turn from visionary philosopher to a man driven by hunger and violence—offers him a piece of spoiled chicken. He dies from food poisoning, his last breath a curse accusing her of murder.
The governor of the Galápagos, having received Friedrich’s letter that blamed Heinz Wittmer for the Baroness’s disappearance, arrives to investigate. Margaret Wittmer defends her family, pointing out that Friedrich could not have mistaken fresh meat for rotten, and that she had supplied Dore with the only good chicken on the island. With no concrete evidence, the governor’s suspicion shifts away from the Wittmers. Left with nothing to lose and no allies, Dore departs the island with the governor, returning to Germany where she later dies after publishing her memoir Satan Came to Floreana.
Meanwhile, the Wittmer family endures. They continue to live and work on Floreana, eventually establishing a small hotel that survives for decades. Margaret remains on the island until her death in 2000, while her son Rolf founds a Galápagos tour‑boat company. The Baroness and her lover Phillipson are never found, their bodies lost to the sea, and the other tragic figures—Heinz Wittmer and the missing boat crew—pass away in obscurity. The film ends with the stark irony that the ordinary family, not the idealistic couple, ultimately prevails on the remote island.
