Early to Bed

The film opens with Donald yawning at sunset and heading to bed, but his head hits the edge of the bed as he lies down. He wriggles down the bed, fluffs his pillow, and settles in again. The moment his head touches the pillow, it explodes into a burst of feathers.

With the new pillow, the bedside clock begins ticking loudly whenever Donald rests his head on it. He tries to silence it by tucking the clock into a drawer, but the drawer starts vibrating from the tick-tock. The relentless sound foreshadows the chaos to come.

Donald grabs the clock and hurls it against the wall in a fit of frustration. The clock lands in a vase, and the vase shakes from the clock's relentless ticking. The disturbance grows louder and more agitating.

He shoves the clock out the window, but the clock gets caught in some laundry and bounces back up. It slides into Donald's yawning mouth and he accidentally swallows it. The ticking clock now sits inside him, continuing to demand attention.

Donald makes several failed attempts to break the clock that still ticks inside him. At last, he spits out the broken clock in a shower of tiny pieces. The tick-tock subsides momentarily as he catches his breath.

When he turns off the lights, his folding bed snaps shut with him inside. He struggles to free himself, and the bed's springs launch him up toward the ceiling. The absurd situation escalates the chaos of the night.

The scene cuts to Donald lying on a bed that is now affixed to the floor with boards and ropes. He settles back down, hoping for quiet sleep. The lingering clock's ticking remains a reminder of the night's chaos.

The broken clock reassembles enough to ring its alarm. Donald sits up fast as the bed flies apart, launching him into the air. He lands back on his makeshift bed, which is now little more than a board with tacks, with a sheet wrapped around his head like a turban.

A sock lands on a spring in front of him, swaying back and forth as if to hypnotize him. Donald glowers at the silly prop as it jiggles like a snake-charmer's rattle. The gag adds one final comic beat to the night's chaos.

The short closes with Donald Duck expressing clear frustration at the chaotic night. The various gadgets and improvised furniture continue to jostle around him as he sits on the battered bed. The ending lingers on his exasperated face.
