What Happens in Drishti: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Drishti (1990) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Eight years into their marriage, Sandhya and Nikhil enjoy a comfortable Mumbai life with their daughter Rashmi, a picture of urban success. Coming from modest roots, they have climbed through merit: Sandhya is an editor at a publishing house, while Nikhil is a dedicated research scientist, and their circle reflects an affluent, intellectual milieu that suits their aspirations.

On their eighth wedding anniversary, a friend introduces his nephew, Rahul, a gifted classical singer. Sandhya is soon drawn to him, and despite loving her husband, she becomes involved in an affair with Rahul that lasts a few months. The confidential nature of the liaison is kept close, with Prabha—their only confidante—being told about the affair in a private, intimate way.

Around this same period, Sandhya discovers she is pregnant, but the couple makes the difficult decision to abort the child, choosing to protect their carefully crafted life together. The emotional strain of the secret affair lingers, shaping their perceptions of fidelity, desire, and commitment.

About a year later, Nikhil reveals his own reckoning: he intends to leave Sandhya, having fallen in love with a much younger lab assistant named Vrinda. This revelation shatters the sense of stability they had built, and Sandhya pleads with him to reconsider, but the couple ultimately separates, beginning a new chapter defined by distance and reflection.

Four years into the aftermath of the divorce, Nikhil comes to a sobering realization: his feelings for Vrinda never equaled the depth of love he once shared with Sandhya. He decides to try to re-enter her life, seeking a second chance at a shared future. When the two finally reconnect after years apart, Sandhya chooses a candid path—she decides to confess to him the truth about her own affair with Rahul, laying bare the complexities of love, loyalty, and the consequences of desire.

In the end, the narrative unfolds as a sensitive examination of marriage, infidelity, and the hard choices people make in pursuit of happiness. Through Sandhya and Nikhil’s journeys, the film probes how past decisions echo into the present and challenge the possibility of reconciliation, collaboration, and emotional honesty in the face of long-buried truths.

Drishti Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Drishti (1990): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Sandhya have an affair with Rahul despite loving her husband?

Sandhya felt an unexpected attraction to Rahul when he was introduced during her eighth wedding anniversary. Despite genuinely loving Nikhil, she became emotionally and physically involved with him for several months. The affair was kept secret, with only her friend Prabha knowing about it. The film suggests that even within a loving marriage, vulnerability to external connections can emerge, especially when one feels a void that the partner cannot fill.

Q2

Why did Sandhya and Nikhil decide to abort the pregnancy?

Sandhya became pregnant during her affair with Rahul. They chose to abort the child to protect their carefully constructed life together. This difficult decision was driven by their desire to maintain their marriage's stability and avoid the complications that would arise from a child conceived outside the marriage. The abortion added significant emotional turbulence to their relationship, creating lasting psychological impact.

Q3

Why did Nikhil leave his family for Vrinda?

About a year after the abortion, Nikhil revealed he intended to leave Sandhya because he had fallen in love with Vrinda, a much younger lab assistant. Nikhil believed this new relationship offered him a different path from their crumbling marriage. The film portrays his departure as a moment of profound selfishness, where he prioritized his own desires over his existing family commitments, despite not having fully processed the emotional state of his marriage.

Q4

Why did Nikhil try to return to Sandhya after four years?

Four years after the divorce, Nikhil came to a sobering realization: his feelings for Vrinda never equaled the depth of love he once shared with Sandhya. He recognized that his affair was not driven by genuine love but by a desire to escape the problems in his marriage. This self-awareness prompted him to seek a second chance at rebuilding their relationship, acknowledging the emotional void his departure had created.

Q5

Why did Sandhya confess about her affair with Rahul during their reunion?

When Nikhil expressed his desire to reunite after years apart, Sandhya chose a candid path and confessed about her affair with Rahul. Her decision was driven by a commitment to emotional honesty after years of carrying the secret. Sandhya felt that any reconciliation had to be built on truth, even if it meant revealing a painful truth that could potentially destroy their chances of getting back together. The confession represented her need for authentic communication rather than repeating the patterns of deception.

Q6

Did Nikhil know about Sandhya's affair before he left?

No, Nikhil was unaware of Sandhya's affair with Rahul during their marriage. The affair remained a closely guarded secret, with only Prabha as Sandhya's confidante. Nikhil's decision to leave was based solely on his own affair with Vrinda. This creates a significant power imbalance in their eventual reconciliation attempt, as Sandhya was carrying the guilt of her secret while Nikhil was not aware of her betrayal.

Q7

Why did Nikhil's relationship with Vrinda not last?

Nikhil's relationship with Vrinda never reached the emotional depth of his marriage to Sandhya. Four years after the divorce, he realized his feelings for Vrinda were superficial compared to the genuine love he had shared with Sandhya. The film suggests that Nikhil's affair with Vrinda was more of an escape from his marriage problems rather than a true emotional connection, ultimately proving unsustainable once the novelty faded.

Q8

What triggered the final breakdown of Sandhya and Nikhil's marriage?

The marriage collapsed due to multiple converging factors: Sandhya's secret affair with Rahul and the subsequent abortion created emotional strain, while Nikhil's affair with Vrinda provided the catalyst for separation. When Nikhil announced his intention to leave for Vrinda, despite Sandhya's pleas to reconsider, the marriage became irreversible. The mutual betrayals, Sandhya's hidden affair and Nikhil's open departure, destroyed the foundation of trust they had built over eight years.

Q9

What was Prabha's role in the story?

Prabha served as Sandhya's only confidante during her affair with Rahul. She was the person Sandhya confided in about the illicit relationship, making her a silent witness to the emotional turmoil Sandhya experienced. Prabha represents the rare moments of vulnerability and secret-sharing in Sandhya's life, providing her a space to express guilt and confusion while keeping the affair hidden from Nikhil.

Q10

Does the movie end with Sandhya and Nikhil getting back together?

The ending is bittersweet and ambiguous. While Nikhil expresses his desire to reunite and they begin reconnecting after years apart, Sandhya's confession about her affair with Rahul fundamentally complicates their reconciliation. The film does not provide a clear resolution about whether they actually get back together. Instead, it leaves their future uncertain but grounded in painful honesty, suggesting that rebuilding their relationship would require confronting the full truth of what happened during their marriage.
