The film takes place in Hong Kong, centered on a Chinese flatbread restaurant owned by the Mo family. This urban setting serves as both the family's livelihood and a bustling hub of local community life, blending the city's energetic street culture with intimate family dynamics.

The movie introduces a Spiritworld realm that exists beyond the living world, featuring the Neihe Bridge, which serves as the threshold between life and death. This afterlife setting is governed by Spiritworld Keepers who manage the bureaucratic process of crossing over, reincarnation, and return.

Siu-fung is the matriarch and backbone of the Mo family who runs the family's flatbread restaurant. She is the heart of the household, protecting her family from external threats. Her sudden death from a heart attack triggers the supernatural events that drive the story.

Sonny is Siu-fung's son, who is loyal to his family and determined to honor his mother's last wishes. He grapples with the pressure of fulfilling promises made to his mother, particularly regarding a wedding sedan arrangement, while also protecting the family from external dangers.

Mo Chak-Shu is Siu-fung's husband, whose life revolves around the restaurant and family. He faces the devastating loss of his wife and must later make difficult decisions about cremation and the possibility of bringing her back to life.

The Hell Gate Keepers are supernatural beings who guide souls through the afterlife process. Two Keepers appear in the film, one who helps Siu-fung navigate the Spiritworld and another who handles the formal decisions about whether she can return to the living world. They represent the bureaucratic authority governing life, death, and reincarnation.

The Family and Duty theme examines how the Mo family relies on their restaurant for income and how Siu-fung's death places immense pressure on her husband and son.
