Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

America Chavez, portrayed by Xochitl Gomez, is a teenager endowed with the extraordinary ability to traverse dimensions by forcefully punching open doorways. In a thrilling adventure, she finds herself being pursued by a demon in the chaotic void between universes, alongside a variant of Doctor Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, a former neurosurgeon turned Master of the Mystic Arts after a life-altering car accident. Their perilous quest leads them to seek the Book of Vishanti, but tragedy strikes when Strange is killed by the relentless demon. In a moment of desperation, Chavez inadvertently creates a portal that transports both herself and Strange’s lifeless body to Earth-616, where the local version of Strange saves her from an additional demon, aided by Wong, the Benedict Wong, who is not only the Sorcerer Supreme of Earth-616 but also Strange’s mentor and ally.

Chavez reveals to them that she is being hunted due to her unique ability to travel through the multiverse, a trait she cannot fully control and which manifests only when she experiences extreme fear. She mentions that the other Strange had located the Book of Vishanti, a mystical tome that would have granted him the power necessary to vanquish the demon, but he fell victim to it. Showing the dead Strange’s corpse as evidence, Chavez captures their attention.

Upon recognizing mystic runes connected to witchcraft, Doctor Strange turns to Wanda Maximoff, depicted by Elizabeth Olsen, a rogue former Avenger who wields chaos magic, telepathy, telekinesis, and reality manipulation for assistance. However, he soon uncovers Wanda’s troubling role in the attacks; having seized the Darkhold, the sinister tome that corrupts its users, she embraces her dark identity as the Scarlet Witch. Consumed by the desire to reunite with her children, Billy and Tommy, portrayed by Julian Hilliard and Jett Klyne respectively—whom she created during her time in Westview—Wanda believes capturing Chavez’s powers will enable her to achieve this mission.

Wanda issues an ultimatum, demanding the surrender of Chavez by sundown. When Strange resists, the Scarlet Witch launches a ruthless assault on Kamar-Taj, resulting in the deaths of numerous sorcerers. In a state of high distress, Chavez unintentionally transports herself and Doctor Strange to Earth-838, a universe from which she cannot return due to her inability to master her powers. Meanwhile, Wanda uses the Darkhold to “dream-walk,” assuming her counterpart’s form in Earth-838, who is living a tranquil suburban life with her own versions of Billy and Tommy. A surviving sorceress sacrifices herself to shatter the Darkhold and disrupt the dream-walk. Consumed by fury, Wanda compels Wong to guide her to Mount Wundagore, the source of the Darkhold’s immense power, to reinforce her dream-walk.

At Mount Wundagore, Wanda discovers the throne that awaits her reign, indicating her destiny to rule across all multiverses. In their attempts to seek aid, Strange and Chavez encounter Earth-838’s Sorcerer Supreme, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, who brings them before the formidable Illuminati, a council comprising Mordo, Peggy Carter (or Captain Carter, played by Hayley Atwell), Blackagar Boltagon (or Black Bolt, whose role is embodied by Anson Mount), Maria Rambeau (who is Captain Marvel, portrayed by Lashana Lynch), Reed Richards (the intelligent leader of the Fantastic Four, played by John Krasinski), and Professor Charles Xavier, fulfilled by the legendary Patrick Stewart.

The Illuminati discloses that reckless usage of their universe’s Darkhold by Strange nearly caused a catastrophic universe-destroying “incursion.” After eliminating Thanos with the powers of the Book of Vishanti, they decided to execute their Strange to prevent future disasters. Mordo regards Earth-616’s Strange as equally perilous, but just as they are about to judge him, Wanda reestablishes her dream-walk in her Earth-838 counterpart’s body and proceeds to massacre the Illuminati, sparing only Mordo, whom Strange vanquishes as they escape with Chavez’s help.

Strange, Chavez, and Rachel McAdams, who plays Christine Palmer, a scientist and Strange’s former lover from Earth-838, manage to flee. Following a crucial conversation with Xavier, before his demise, Strange learns of the location of the Book of Vishanti. They venture into the liminal space between universes to find the book, the opposite of the Darkhold, but Wanda arrives in time to eradicate it, taking control of Chavez’s mind and dispatching Strange and Palmer to a devastated universe.

In a dramatic showdown, Strange confronts the corrupted version of himself from the ruined universe, conquering him and utilizing the Darkhold to dream-walk into his deceased Earth-616 counterpart. With Wong’s assistance, Strange liberates Chavez from Wanda’s grip just as she seeks to seize Chavez’s powers. He inspires her to harness her abilities, leading to an emotional confrontation where she transports Wanda to Earth-838 to face the consequences of her actions. Once she sees her children recoil in fear from her threatening presence, Wanda-616 realizes her grave mistakes. In an act of redemption, she uses her powers to collapse Mount Wundagore, eradicating all copies of the Darkhold throughout the multiverse and seemingly sacrificing herself in the process.

In the aftermath, Chavez returns Strange and Palmer to their respective worlds. With Kamar-Taj restored, the remaining sorcerers, accompanied by Chavez, continue their magical training. Strange, having been affected by his exploits with the Darkhold, now bears a third eye. In a mid-credits appearance, a mysterious sorceress warns Strange that his actions have incited an incursion he now must help to rectify, leading him to follow her into the Dark Dimension.
