Detention (2011) follows a late-night nightmare at Grizzly Lake High, where a serial killer known as Cinderhella stalks the student body. In a twist that blends horror with cheeky humor, the detention room reveals a hidden weapon: the school’s plush bear mascot is actually a time machine. The kids learn that the world is supposed to end in 1992, a fate tied to Ione’s mother Sloane, who refuses to attend prom with Verge and, in a shocking body swap, passes herself off as her daughter. The real Ione is trapped in Sloane’s body in 1992, and the swap colors every relationship with confusion and longing. Through Sloane’s manipulation, Riley’s crush Clapton becomes entangled with the altered dynamics of high school life, creating rifts in friendships that the group must navigate.

Guided by the bear, the five teens rocket back to 1992. In this retro year, Ione reveals a startling preference to stay, having become popular and fluent in every passing trend. They uncover a deeper conspiracy: Sander is the true killer, and Verge is complicit in tearing apart reality itself. Despite the danger, Ione agrees to attend the prom with Verge, who promises not to unleash catastrophe—an uneasy truce that also gives Riley a chance to address her own family history, hoping to spare her father from spiraling into alcoholism.

When they return to the present, the changes are real but incomplete. The murders still occur, and a fragile peace between the friends is tested. Riley and Clapton have grown closer, and their romance survives the unraveling of the night, even as they face danger from a jealous Sander. The trio fights back, and Sander meets a violent end, impaled on the bear mascot’s fangs in a dramatic, symbolic takedown.

The climax ties together romance, identity, and consequence. Ione remains in Sloane’s body and ultimately marries Verge, establishing a tense, uneasy alliance that keeps Sloane under a firm, watchful control. The closing scene pivots to a bizarre, sci-fi finale: plant-based aliens invade, frustrated by humanity’s exploitation and destruction of the planet’s flora, signaling that even after the chaos of prom night, the world is far from safe—and far from ordinary.
