Robert Bogerud answers a phone call in which a mysterious voice says, 'Meet me at the red line strike.' He identifies himself and agrees to follow the instruction, setting his night on an uneasy path. The message pushes him toward the first mysterious assignment of the story.

Robert goes to a strip club to meet someone for a date. A stripper performs on stage, taking off her clothes, while a naked man appears with a coat in a lurid tableau. The provocative scene foregrounds Robert's detachment from ordinary life.

Next morning, a drunk Robert is confronted by Rita Stjernen who asks if he is the Robert Bogerud. She says her home is the only place to get a case, and he agrees to leave the Marihøna for her place. This invitation sets him on a new, unstable living situation.

Robert arrives at Rita's old unfinished house and meets Lars Erik, the husband, and Isabel, the sister. An elder woman explains the context and asks about his job, and he says he uses his feelings. The old woman chooses him as home keeper and detective for their household.

At midnight, Robert sneaks into Lars Erik's room to see what he is up to, then slips into Isabel's room. Isabel is annoyed and kicks him out of the room, escalating the tension in the house. The night marks the start of a fraught dynamic between him and the siblings.

Robert learns that his job is to find Olav Stjernen, who has been dead for many years. He discusses the task with the old woman, who hints that she herself isn't meant to be there. The quest becomes a central mystery of his stay.

The next morning, Robert tries to escape and steals a car. Lars Erik shouts after him, 'Come back here you damn mongo,' as Robert drives away. The escape sets off a sequence of pursuit and consequences.

Robert returns to the police station, where his dad isn't in a mood to forgive. He then goes back to the house to apologize for escaping and to reset his position in the Stjernens' household.

Robert's second attempt to navigate the house is met with Isabel's aggression in her workplace. He glances at a catalog that features a naked image of Isabel, which deepens the tension between them. The moment underlines the perverse strain of their interactions.

Robert returns to Marihøna to check if he understands what's going on. Rita arrives to reclaim him, but he tells her to stay, and she remains at the house. The dynamic between them becomes more complicated.

To appease the nervous household, Robert sleeps with Rita and their activity is heard by others. The scene signals a fragile peace through a morally dubious alliance. The couple's actions mask the underlying instability in the home.

Lars Erik grows increasingly aggressive and hits Robert, shoving him into a closet. Robert ends up in jail with Isabel, and begins to plot another escape. The sequence intensifies the conflict and foreshadows a dramatic breakout.

Robert devises an escape plan, breaks free, but Lars Erik shoots him. In a twist, he reaches the place he wanted to go with Isabel and Olav Stjernen, Monopoly in hand. In the closing moments, Rita is in trouble and Lars Erik has been sent to prison, still trying to escape.
