What Happens in Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky (2010) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

A deadly situation unfolds as a terrorist faction known as the Red Siamese Cats invades a secure laboratory, wiping it out with a powerful explosion. They broadcast a chilling online message claiming they have seized a dangerous bacterium and announcing themselves as the Red Siamese Cats, a group that had been eradicated a decade earlier.

Conan Edogawa, Kogoro Mori, Ran Mori and the Detective Boys are invited by Jirokichi Suzuki to board his airship for a staged confrontation with the famed jewel thief Kaito Kid. The plan: bait Kid into stealing the precious Lady Sky as the airship nears Osaka. Aboard the vessel, alongside the police and crew, are four media professionals—Takamichi Fujioka, Masaki Mizukawa, Kasumi Nishitani, and Junpei Ishimoto—whose presence adds a layer of tension and scrutiny to the spectacle.

Inside the smoking room, a waitress discovers an ampoule bearing the Red Siamese Cats emblem hidden beneath a couch, foreshadowing the danger to come. Conan, recalling Ran’s past misgivings about a flying airship being a UFO, asks Doctor Agasa to keep that memory in check. A waiter overhears the conversation from the shadows, hinting that something bigger is at play.

As the airship tour unfolds, Ran diverges to get a closer look at Lady Sky and unexpectedly encounters Kid, who is wearing a disguise. She believes she’s found the thief and subdues the masked guest, threatening to hand him over to Ginzo Nakamori. Kid unmasks himself, feigning the identity of Shinichi Kudo to placate her, claiming she once mistook the airship for a UFO.

Meanwhile, the crew begins to notice a rash spreading among some of the adults—Fujioka is affected and knocked unconscious, while the waitress with the rash is placed in quarantine along with the unconscious journalist. Conan splits from the main group to reunite with the Junior Detective League, who are exploring the ship’s attic, where an unidentified assailant appears to open the roof, allowing the Red Siamese Cats to take control.

The group in the lobby is later forced to watch as the rogue team seizes Lady Sky and issues a dark warning: if resisted, bombs will detonate or a second ampoule will spread the contaminant. Conan discovers four bombs in the attic and foils their plan, while Heiji Hattori attempts to read the villains’ true objectives and foresees a calculated assault on key locations, including a major city-building complex, to maximize panic and chaos.

As the ship sails toward Nara, the Red Siamese Cats announce their larger scheme over the internet, while Mizukawa’s rash symptoms cause concern and Nishitani laments the Detective Boys’ absence, a moment the conspirators exploit to tighten their grip. Ai Haibara informs Conan through a Detective Badge that the group is targeting him, but the message is interrupted when a short-haired waitress—revealed to be part of the conspiracy—strikes Ai and reveals her involvement.

A dramatic reversal happens when Conan is hurled from the airship’s windows by the leader, only to be saved by Kaito Kid. Heiji deduces the Cats’ goal would be to crash the airship into no fewer than three landmarks and unleash the bacteria across the city. Conan alerts the police and coordinates with a helicopter team to rejoin the airship, while the remaining bombs are tracked and disarmed.

The investigation leads to a startling revelation: the Red Siamese Cats are a team of foreign mercenaries hired by Takamichi Fujioka, using the non-existent bacterium as a cover. Nishitani and Ishimoto are revealed to be Fujioka’s co-conspirators, while the two embedded bombs in the lobby are meant to secure their escape and prize Lady Sky. When Fujioka attempts to eliminate Conan, the airship glides beneath a bridge and Conan's belt is used to launch a tethered soccer ball, wedging the craft and collapsing the plan. Fujioka falls into the ocean, and his accomplices are knocked unconscious.

Kid reenters the scene, frees Ran from the railing, and departs with Lady Sky. As they stand in the moonlight, Ran—believing Kid to be Shinichi—asks him to surrender to the police. Kid agrees to be captured only if she shares a kiss, but the moment reveals a truth Ran senses: the thief’s behavior is not that of Shinichi. When Conan finally confronts Kid, Ran’s later reflection makes it clear she recognizes the difference between the fearless flirtation and the familiar conduct of the true Shinichi, leaving the moment open in her memory as the jewel slips away.

Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Detective Conan: The Lost Ship in the Sky (2010): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did the Red Siamese Cats pretend to have a dangerous bacterium?

The Red Siamese Cats claimed to have seized a lethal bacterium as a cover for their actual plan. The bacterium never existed, the terrorists were foreign mercenaries hired by journalist Takamichi Fujioka to create enough chaos and panic that they could steal the Lady Sky jewel and escape unnoticed. The fake biological threat forced the authorities to focus on containment rather than pursuit.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, a waitress finds an ampoule with the Red Siamese Cats emblem hidden in the smoking room, establishing that the biological threat was a staged prop.

  • red siamese cats
  • bacterium
  • fake threat
  • cover plan
  • mercenaries
Q2

Who hired the Red Siamese Cats as mercenaries?

Takamichi Fujioka, one of the four media professionals aboard the airship, hired the Red Siamese Cats. Fujioka was a journalist who orchestrated the entire operation to steal the Lady Sky diamond. He recruited his colleagues Nishitani, Ishimoto, and the short-haired waitress as his co-conspirators.

Foreshadowing: The rash outbreak that affects Fujioka and the waitress early on is part of the act to make the biological threat appear legitimate.

  • takamichi fujioka
  • mercenaries
  • hired
  • conspiracy
  • journalist
Q3

What was the real objective of the airship hijacking?

The real objective was to steal the Lady Sky jewel, not to release any bacterium or crash the airship into the city. The threats of biological warfare and crashing were elaborate distractions designed to panic authorities and create an opportunity for Fujioka and his team to escape with the priceless diamond while everyone focused on the apparent existential threats.

Foreshadowing: Jirokichi Suzuki deliberately baited the airship with Lady Sky to lure both Kaito Kid and potential thieves, making it the obvious target.

  • lady sky
  • steal
  • jewel
  • objective
  • heist
Q4

Why did Kaito Kid save Conan from falling from the airship?

Kaito Kid saved Conan because despite being on opposite sides of the law, Kid recognized Conan as a fellow brilliant strategist and held a grudging respect for him. Kid also had his own interests at stake, he wanted to claim Lady Sky for himself, and allowing the airship to crash would have destroyed the jewel along with everyone aboard.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Kid had already encountered Ran and revealed himself to her, showing his willingness to interact with the main group rather than remain a ghost.

  • kaito kid
  • save
  • conan
  • rescue
  • respect
Q5

Why did Ran mistake Kaito Kid for Shinichi Kudo?

Ran mistook Kaito Kid for Shinichi because Kid was wearing a disguise that mimicked Shinichi's appearance. When confronted by Ran, Kid removed the disguise and pretended to be Shinichi to pacify her, even referencing the time she once mistook the airship for a UFO. Ran later reflects on this encounter and realizes the behavioral differences between the real Shinichi and Kid's flirtatious manner.

Foreshadowing: Conan earlier asked Doctor Agasa to suppress Ran's memory of calling the airship a UFO, which Kid later exploits in his disguise.

  • ran
  • kaito kid
  • shinichi
  • disguise
  • mistaken identity
Q6

How did Conan stop the airship from crashing into the city?

Conan used his portable belt to launch a tethered soccer ball that wedged against a bridge as the airship glided beneath it. This physically constrained the airship and prevented it from continuing on its crash course toward the city landmarks. Simultaneously, he coordinated with police and a helicopter team to rejoin the vessel and disarm the remaining bombs.

Foreshadowing: Heiji Hattori had earlier predicted the Cats' plan to crash the airship into multiple city landmarks, giving Conan time to prepare countermeasures.

  • conan
  • airship
  • crash
  • stop
  • soccer ball
  • bridge
Q7

Who were the actual villains among the airship passengers?

The four media professionals, Takamichi Fujioka, Kasumi Nishitani, Junpei Ishimoto, and the short-haired waitress, were the conspirators. Fujioka hired the Red Siamese Cats (mercenaries) and orchestrated the entire plot. Nishitani and Ishimoto were his accomplices, while the waitress was one of the embedded mercenaries who attacked Ai Haibara when she discovered the group was targeting Conan.

Foreshadowing: Nishitani's lament about the Detective Boys' absence created a distraction that allowed the conspirators to tighten their control over the ship.

  • conspirators
  • villains
  • fujioka
  • nishitani
  • ishimoto
  • waitress
Q8

What happened to Takamichi Fujioka at the end?

Fujioka fell into the ocean when the airship was forced beneath a bridge by Conan's soccer ball maneuver. His escape plan collapsed as the airship wedged against the bridge structure, and he tumbled out of the vessel into the water below. His accomplices were knocked unconscious during the confrontation.

Foreshadowing: The two bombs placed in the lobby were intended to secure Fujioka's escape route, but they were never used as planned.

  • fujioka
  • fall
  • ocean
  • captured
  • defeat
Q9

What was the purpose of the rash that spread among the adults?

The rash was part of the fake biological threat to make the claimed bacterium seem credible. Fujioka and his team deliberately induced rash symptoms in certain passengers to sell the illusion that a dangerous pathogen was spreading through the airship. This forced the authorities to implement quarantines and focus on medical containment rather than pursuing the actual heist.

Foreshadowing: The first signs of the rash appeared shortly after the Red Siamese Cats' online broadcast, timed to reinforce the biological threat narrative.

  • rash
  • fake
  • biological threat
  • pathogen
  • containment
Q10

How did Heiji Hattori know the airship would attack city landmarks?

Heiji Hattori analyzed the villains' communications and deduced their true objective was to crash the airship into a major city-building complex to maximize panic and chaos. This prediction allowed Conan to warn the police and prepare defensive measures before the airship reached the city.

Foreshadowing: The Red Siamese Cats' online broadcast announcing their broader scheme toward Nara provided clues about their intended target locations.
