Princess Tarawatee was executed because the Thai ruler Khun Hansuek discovered her in the arms of another man, accusing her of infidelity. Enraged by the betrayal, he sentenced both her and her lover to death, she was to be beheaded and he was to be burned alive.

Earlier, the ruler had wed Tarawatee after seizing her from the Khmer Empire, binding her to the court through both political marriage and personal desire.

As flames began to surround her at the execution site, Tarawatee tried to transfer her spirit into the body of Daow, a village woman who was her exact physical double. She sent her spirit to inhabit Daow, hoping to survive by living through her double.

Before her execution, Tarawatee learned from a fellow inmate about Daow's existence, sparking a desperate plan for magical escape.

Just as Tarawatee's spirit zipped toward Daow to complete the transfer, Daow was killed by a magical spell. This caused the intended transfer to fail at the last moment, leaving Tarawatee's spirit without the intended vessel.
