Death Proof

Three friends drive down Congress Avenue toward a bar to celebrate Julia's birthday. Julia reveals the death-proof lap dance stunt: Arlene must address her as 'Butterfly,' buy her a drink, and recite a poem line to receive the dance. This set-up foreshadows the violent turn the night will take.

A aging Hollywood stuntman, Stuntman Mike, trails the women to the bar and claims the lap dance. He exudes a calculating charm as he pushes the arrangement forward. Arlene remains wary, but is eventually drawn into the encounter.

The women prepare to depart with their friend Lanna after the bar. Julia's old classmate Pam accepts Mike's offer of a ride home. Mike maintains a casual front as the evening spirals toward tragedy.

Mike takes Pam to his stunt car and boasts that it is 'death proof' for the driver. He speeds up and slams on the brakes, crushing Pam’s skull on the dashboard. The brutal act marks the first confirmed killing linked to Mike.

Mike catches up with the women’s car and drives into it head-on at high speed, killing Arlene, Julia, and Shanna. He survives with no serious injuries, while the women are killed in the wreck. The sheriff later questions the circumstances of the crash.

Sheriff McGraw suspects Mike killed the women on purpose, but cannot charge him because Mike was sober while the victims were intoxicated. The case lingers as an unresolved tragedy, enabling Mike to remain free for the moment. The community remains unsettled by the mysterious death.

Fourteen months later, Abernathy Ross, Kim Mathis, and Lee Montgomery drive through Lebanon, Tennessee during a film shoot break. They stop at a convenience store, and Mike begins to observe them from his car. He starts to photograph the trio without their knowledge.

The women pick up their friend Zoë Bell from the airport and discuss a test-drive of a 1970 Dodge Challenger, the same model from Vanishing Point. The owner Jasper agrees to let them test-drive it unsupervised, with Lee Montgomery left behind as collateral due to an offhand remark about her being a porn star.

Zoë proposes a dangerous stunt called 'Ship's Mast,' where she rides the car’s hood while belts are fastened to the car. Abernathy and Kim reluctantly agree to participate, attracted by the thrill and the chance to push boundaries. Mike remains unseen but is clearly present nearby.

Kim drives at high speed while Zoë clings to the hood, gripping the belts as Mike’s car looms behind. He rear-ends them, sending Zoë flying and forcing her to cling for dear life. The chain of collisions continues as the stunt escalates beyond control.

During the credits, photos of various women appear, implying that they were all previous victims of Mike. The film closes with a suggestion of his long history of violence and the lasting fear surrounding his acts.
