Dear Maya

From the opening, the film follows two teenage girls, Anna and Ira, as they study at a Catholic convent in Shimla, their days split between classroom routines, romance novels, and the thrill of sleepovers. They are drawn to their enigmatic neighbor, Maya Devi, a striking woman who lives alone in a large house with her two dogs and barely steps outside. Anna’s mother explains Maya’s backstory: she lost her father early and lived with her chacha and mother, only to have her chacha repeatedly block suitors in order to keep the family estate intact. After his death, Maya’s life grows lonely and constricted, a beauty whose radiant glow seems trapped behind the walls of her home.

Ira, restless and mischievous, hatches a plan to inject light into Maya’s life by writing love letters to her, pretending to be a former Delhi suitor who still pines for Maya. The prank escalates as Ira goes so far as to break into Maya’s house to steal a photograph, hoping to spark a connection. The intrusion ends badly: Ira injures her ankle, Maya’s maid is hurt, and both girls are reprimanded. Anna is left to fill in for the maid’s duties while she recovers, and this period of forced proximity deepens Anna’s curiosity about Maya. The letters keep arriving, and Anna notices Maya growing happier with each new message, as if a hidden door to possibility has been nudged open.

The turning point arrives when Maya shocks everyone by announcing that she will sell the house and move to Delhi to find the letter writer. Six years pass as guilt and longing push Anna to search for Maya in Delhi. She posters the city, makes countless calls, and follows every lead, even meeting a boyfriend, Rahul, who eventually proposes. Yet Anna cannot bring herself to accept, returning to Shimla to seek guidance from her parents. Ira visits, and the old rift reopens; Anna remains wary, still believing the prank set Maya adrift. Ira is deeply sorry and persists, eventually joining Anna on a plan to rebuild their bond. She accompanies Anna back to Delhi, and though Anna remains cautious, her perspective begins to shift as Ira reveals a painful truth: she too fell in love with Shimla, only to lose that love in a motor accident. The admission awakens Anna to the real consequences of their actions, and she forgives Ira, urging her to transfer to a Delhi college to start anew. Yet Ira makes a final pivot and decides to return to Shimla, a choice that leaves Anna to face the future anew.

Just as Anna bids Ira farewell at the train station, a phone call from Maya interrupts the moment. The two girls hurry to meet her, only to find Maya radiant and fulfilled at a zoo garden. Maya unfolds her journey: she traveled to Delhi, searched for the letter writer, found nothing, but discovered that life beyond Shimla was warmer than she had imagined. She eventually met a kind jewelry shop owner, Ved, and they married, building a life in Delhi. The letters had awakened her to the possibilities of living fully, and she urges the girls to say “yes” to life. Anna and Ira are both moved by Maya’s transformation and grateful for the reunion, which becomes a healing moment.

In the final beat, the futures of the two friends shift toward hopeful futures. Anna accepts Rahul’s marriage proposal, opening a path to a new romance, while Ira chooses to transfer to a Delhi college to pursue her own independence and growth. Maya’s story lingers as a quiet testament to resilience and the power of opening one’s life to new possibilities.
