An aging hangman breaks down at the prospect of performing his last execution before retirement. He begins narrating his life to the governor, and the bulk of the story unfolds as a long flashback. Many scenes play out without him, keeping his presence off-screen for much of the plot.

Frankie pleads with Eddie to come with her, or to stay, when he is summoned away. Unable to take her with him, Eddie leaves her in the care of Shackle the bargeman, who cannot stay due to prior commitments. Olaf uses the quiet nights to make himself at home in Frankie's cabin, drinking and waiting for an opportunity.

When Eddie returns unexpectedly, he finds Frankie and Olaf in a compromising situation. A fight erupts, and Eddie is knocked overboard and fails to resurface. The police arrive on the scene, and Olaf is arrested for murder.
