Daughter’s Daughter

Ai sustains a leg injury that requires hospitalization, marking the initial event of her health crisis. During her stay, her mother Shen visits her, bringing Emma, her estranged daughter whom she sent away years ago. This reunion rekindles unresolved emotions and family tensions.

Shen arrives in Taipei after returning from New York, and meets her daughter Emma for the first time in years. Zuer, Ai's lesbian daughter, also arrives with her girlfriend Jiayi, leading to the first meeting between her and Emma. The reunions reveal longstanding family rifts and new bonds.

Five years later, Zuer travels with Jiayi to New York to undergo intrauterine insemination. Despite her mother's opposition based on her perceived immaturity, Zuer is committed to having a child and calls Ai in tears before her procedure.

Zuer and Jiayi meet Emma and her paternal father Johnny for dinner. The meal symbolizes family reconnecting, but the evening takes a tragic turn as Jiayi and Zuer are involved in a car accident on their way to New Jersey, leading to Jiayi's immediate death and Zuer's severe injuries.

After receiving news from Johnny about the accident, Ai immediately travels to New York to be with her family. Upon arrival, she learns that Zuer has already succumbed to her injuries, leaving her heartbroken and in shock.

Overcome with grief, Ai refuses to accept Zuer's death and asks Johnny to leave her alone. She searches for Emma and they find Zuer's Airbnb, where Ai is too devastated to go through Zuer's belongings, highlighting her ongoing mourning process.

The next day, Ai and Emma visit a fertility clinic and discover that Zuer and Jiayi left behind a healthy frozen embryo. Ai, overwhelmed by the situation, initially considers terminating the embryo but is later confronted with the possibility of giving Zuer’s child a future.

Emma expresses her desire to keep Zuer’s baby and begins searching for a surrogate mother. Ai disapproves, citing her concerns about caring for another child and her own aging, leading to a heated argument about motherhood and family legacy.

After attending Zuer’s funeral and facing Emma’s disappointment, Ai ultimately agrees to proceed with childbirth via surrogacy. This decision marks a turning point, signifying her acceptance of Zuer's legacy and her granddaughter’s future.

Ai and Emma share a dinner orchestrated by Johnny. During a cigarette break, Emma asks Ai about her past abandonment, prompting Ai to open up about her fears and regrets. They part ways with a heartfelt hug, strengthening their newfound understanding and connection.

Before leaving Zuer's Airbnb, Ai searches for her daughter's message and finds it on the window: 'Why do I not have my mother's name?' Her emotional discovery leaves her with a bittersweet feeling as she departs with a renewed sense of love.

Two years later, Ai is raising her granddaughter Zuer’s daughter in Taipei. Shen, now severely demented, repeatedly confuses the present with the past and makes critical comments about Ai’s maturity, reflecting her continued struggles with memory and her opinions on Ai's parenting.
