In early 1945 the Soviet Red Army broke into eastern Germany, sending millions fleeing in winter. In East Prussia, Gotenhafen was the last open port, where crowded ships left constantly. The infamous former KdF cruiser Wilhelm Gustloff, built for 1,000 but said to carry up to 10,000 refugees, sank, leaving only a handful of survivors.
