Wilde returns from a mission in Guyana to his Jersey home, where he maintains a cover as the owner of a boatyard. He finds his handler Peter Ravenspur in the company of a mysterious woman named Mari, who claims to be Ravenspur's long-lost niece. The uneasy reunion hints at deeper loyalties and fault lines within the operation.

Wilde responds to a personal message published in The Times, prompting a move to London. He confesses to a fear that his nerve has gone and even considers resigning, but his nerves are soon tested by the mission ahead. The decision to press on marks a shift from routine undercover work to dangerous international intrigue.

In London, Wilde meets his superior Canning. Canning urges him to undertake the assassination of Balin, a defector scientist who is staying in England before a journey to America. Wilde reluctantly accepts the assignment, sensing danger and deception around the task.

Wilde seduces Rhoda, a housekeeper at Balin's location, to gain access. He shoots Balin, completing the hit, but is immediately captured by CIA agent Lucinda and interrogated. Lucinda reveals that someone is orchestrating the deaths of British agents and traces Wilde back to Jersey through the Adams killing in Guyana.
