The movie unfolds across Japan, moving from a city hospital to desolate country roads, an abandoned factory, and sewer tunnels. Matsumoto is a wealthy, calculating yakuza boss who pulls Togawa into the heist and uses his influence to control the operation. He treats others as tools to expand his empire and safeguard his family's wealth, demonstrating ruthlessness matched only by his willingness to protect his position at any cost.

Togawa is a former bank robber released early through Matsumoto's influence, and he leads the crew primarily to fund his sister Rie's surgery. He is driven by loyalty to friends and a deep desire to help his paraplegic sister, even when it means taking extreme criminal risks that ultimately lead to his downfall.

Rie is Togawa's sister, left paraplegic from a past accident. She urges Togawa to quit crime and shows him a rosary, symbolizing a moral counterweight to his path of violence. Her well-being provides Togawa with a personal motive to change, representing the innocent life he riskly trying to save.

The film features a dominantly dark tone driven by the cruel mechanics of the criminal underworld and the futile nature of Togawa's quest for redemption.
