What Happens in Contagion: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Contagion (1988) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Mark, John Doyle, a naive real estate agent, is sent by his boss to Crompton for a job. Along the road, he spots a beautiful woman being abused by crazies that live in the bush, and he stops to aid her. However, the crazies attack and abuse him instead. He escapes and, moving through the forest, finds a nearby mansion where he is welcomed by millionaire Bael, Ray Barrett, and two seductive girls who live with him: Cleo, Nathy Gaffney as Cleo, and Helen, Pamela Hawkesford as Helen. They introduce Mark to their lives of luxury and pleasure. Bael explains the secret of his success, the Threefold Plan, a ruthless method to push rivals out of the way, and he teaches Mark how to make millions on currency exchange markets. Mark then returns to his girlfriend Cheryl, Nicola Bartlett, changed, demanding all their savings to invest with Bael and acting violently toward her, while also killing his bosses. Concerned, Cheryl follows Mark as he returns to Bael's house only to find there is nothing there—just an old ruin. She must now confront a deranged and murderous Mark.

Contagion Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Contagion (1988): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Mark become violent and kill his bosses after visiting Bael?

Mark undergoes a complete psychological transformation after being exposed to Bael's Threefold Plan. The combination of his traumatic beating at the hands of the crazies, the seductive luxury of Bael's mansion, and the ruthless philosophy Bael teaches him erodes Mark's moral boundaries. Bael's teachings normalize extreme measures for financial gain, and Mark applies this logic first to his bosses, killing them when they refuse to support his investment schemes. His violence is the direct result of Bael's psychological manipulation and the corrupted worldview Mark adopts.

Foreshadowing: Bael explicitly explains his philosophy of pushing rivals out of the way to achieve success, foreshadowing Mark's later violent actions.

Q2

What is the Threefold Plan that Bael teaches Mark?

The Threefold Plan is Bael's ruthless method for achieving wealth and success in currency exchange markets. It involves eliminating competitors through any means necessary, treating financial success as a game where morality does not apply. Bael teaches Mark to view rivals as obstacles to be removed rather than people to be respected. The plan represents a complete rejection of ethical business practices in favor of cutthroat manipulation.

Q3

Was Bael's mansion real or a supernatural illusion?

The mansion appears to be a supernatural trap designed to lure and corrupt victims. When Cheryl finally pursues Mark to the location, she discovers only an old ruin, nothing remains of the luxurious estate Mark described. This suggests the entire mansion, along with Bael, Cleo, and Helen, were either ghosts, holograms, or a collective illusion meant to manipulate Mark. The mansion serves as a trap that transforms ordinary people into dangerous criminals.

Foreshadowing: The mansion appears suddenly in the forest after Mark's traumatic beating, suggesting it materialized specifically for him.

Q4

Why does Mark demand Cheryl's savings to invest with Bael?

Mark becomes completely convinced that the Threefold Plan is a guaranteed path to wealth. His demand for their savings reflects both his newly corrupted values and his desire to prove the plan works. Bael's seduction of Mark was thorough, showing him luxury, teaching him the method, and creating a sense that immense wealth is immediately accessible. Mark's aggressive demand also demonstrates his transformation from a passive real estate agent into a controlling, demanding figure who will not accept refusal.

Foreshadowing: Bael shows Mark the opulent lifestyle available through his method, planting the seed of greed.

Q5

Why does Mark kill his real estate bosses?

Mark kills his bosses because they represent the old, honest way of doing business that Bael taught him to despise. When they refuse to support his schemes or dismiss his ideas about investing with Bael, Mark views them as obstacles, just as Bael described rivals in his Threefold Plan. The murders are Mark's first application of Bael's philosophy in the real world, demonstrating how completely his moral compass has shifted. His bosses' rejection of his new worldview triggers his violent response.

Foreshadowing: Bael explains that the Threefold Plan requires pushing rivals out of the way, directly setting up Mark's actions.

Q6

What does Cheryl find when she reaches Bael's house?

When Cheryl arrives at the location where Mark described Bael's magnificent mansion, she discovers only an old, decaying ruin. There is no sign of the luxurious estate, the wealthy millionaire, or the two seductive women Mark had described. This moment confirms that Bael's world was an illusion or supernatural construct, and it leaves Cheryl facing a terrifying reality: the man she loves has been fundamentally corrupted by something that does not even exist.

Q7

What is the significance of the crazies attacking Mark on the road?

The attack by the crazies serves as the catalyst that breaks down Mark's defenses and makes him vulnerable to Bael's manipulation. After being beaten and abused, Mark's sense of safety is destroyed, making the sudden appearance of a welcoming mansion in the forest seem like salvation. This traumatic experience primes Mark to accept Bael's teachings without question. The crazies represent the dangerous outside world that Bael's mansion offers escape from, creating a psychological dependency.

Q8

How does Bael manipulate Mark into becoming violent?

Bael uses a multi-step manipulation process: first offering refuge after Mark's trauma, then seducing him with luxury and sexual favors, teaching a ruthless philosophy that justifies any means to achieve wealth, and finally sending him back into the world to apply these lessons. Mark's transformation is complete because Bael exploited his vulnerability at exactly the right moment. The combination of psychological grooming, ideological corruption, and practical instruction creates a person who sees violence as a legitimate tool for advancement.

Q9

Why does Mark become violent toward his girlfriend Cheryl?

Mark's violence toward Cheryl stems from his complete transformation under Bael's influence. The man who once cared for her now views her as another obstacle to his wealth-building goals. When Cheryl questions his demands or resists his plans, Mark responds with the same aggression he learned from Bael. Her refusal to hand over their savings represents rejection of his new worldview, which he cannot tolerate. The corruption extends to all his relationships, not just his professional life.

Q10

Is the entire story with Bael a supernatural trap?

Yes, the evidence strongly suggests Bael's mansion is a supernatural trap that lures victims through psychological manipulation. The mansion appears only when needed, offers an irresistible temptation (luxury, wealth, pleasure), corrupts the victim with a ruthless philosophy, and then disappears when the victim is sent back into the world as a dangerous instrument. The ruined state of the mansion when Cheryl arrives confirms nothing material existed there. The film presents Bael as a predatory entity that uses illusion to create violent criminals.
