Optimistic Joline marries Carl and they set up life in a NYC loft. She runs a nightclub and remains generally content while Carl resents his assignment to photograph food instead of news. Their different ambitions lay the groundwork for strain in their marriage.

Carl is unhappy about being assigned to food photography rather than news. After returning home, Joline receives a depressed message from him and calls her brother Jay. Jay lets her stay over, setting the stage for a temporary refuge.

In the morning after the message, Joline learns Carl has moved out roughly 1.5 years into their marriage. He leaves a bouquet of daisies and a note saying he needs space. The separation is sudden and painful.

Joline liquefies the daisies in a blender, trying to process the shock of the split. She spends the next few days in a daze as her cheerful outlook darkens. She still moves forward by planning a surprise birthday party for Carl.

On Carl's birthday, she hosts the party and presents the cake to the guests. She then receives a random postcard from Carl during the celebration. After the party, she sneaks out of the bathroom window into the alley, where she helps a carjacker and gives him money to reach his mother.

Judging by a photo and a smudged postmark, Joline heads to Texas to track Carl. She spots one of his food photos in an El Paso newspaper and begins tailing him to his mobile home. Her stakeout gradually reveals Carl's daily life and routines.

At Carl's mobile home, his neighbor Neil immediately notices Joline and flirts with her. Joline observes Carl's schedule and the life he's built apart from her. The stakeout deepens her resolve to understand and possibly fix their relationship.

Inside the El Paso Times offices, Joline finds the photo editor and quietly suggests Carl should be assigned to more challenging work. The editor's reaction hints at resistance to changing Carl's path. Joline quickly asks him to forget what she said, fearing consequences for him and Carl.

Joline sees Carl kissing Carmen outside her house. Carmen introduces Joline to her Mexican-American grandfather. An unwelcome ex, T-Bo, barges in, adding further tension.

That evening, Jay and Carmen, who have grown closer, return to watch Joline's stakeout. Neil continues to tease Joline with a provocative blowup doll, and Jay and Carmen end up kissing as well. The awkward night deepens the dynamics around the stakeout.

T-Bo shows up at Carl's residence, but Joline stands guard and keeps him away. The tense visit is defused, but the night leaves a mark on the fragile situation.

A mystic elder embeds Joline and provides a protection remedy; she sprinkles it throughout Carl's house. Carl accuses her of absorbing his luck and points to his increased newsworthy assignments as proof. He remains unaware of the role her influence played in his career.

Determined to stay close, Joline sets up a vigil across the road and Jay and Carmen join her, sleeping under the stars. Carl confronts them and the situation escalates into chaos, leading to police involvement and Joline being taken to a mental hospital.

Joline attends Jay and Carmen's El Paso wedding as guests dance around them. The scene ends with a narrator reflecting on leaps of faith, suggesting they may be stupid, brave, crazy, or very lucky. The film closes on a note of uncertain possibility and personal growth.
