Churuli (2021) Spoiler-Free Summary – What It's About

In a tangled stretch of Kerala’s forest lies Churuli, a remote village that feels suspended between reality and myth. Two undercover police officers are dispatched there to locate a fugitive who has disappeared into the tangled pathways of the woods. The assignment quickly turns into a study of perception, as the very landscape seems to shift, reflecting the officers’ growing uncertainty about what is truly being pursued.

Anthony, a seasoned operative accustomed to navigating bureaucratic mazes, pairs with the eager but inexperienced Shajivan, whose fresh‑off‑the‑beat enthusiasm clashes with the village’s bewildering rhythm. Their partnership is defined by a fragile balance—Anthony’s pragmatic instincts tempered by Shajivan’s curiosity—while both must adopt false identities to blend into a community that greets them with a disarming hospitality that soon feels oddly opaque.

The film unfolds with a dream‑like atmosphere, where ordinary details melt into uncanny symbols and an enigmatic presence subtly guides the duo down ever‑more labyrinthine routes. Light and shadow play across moss‑covered bridges, and the silence of the forest is broken by whispers that suggest more than mere superstition. Churuli becomes a character in itself, a place that tests the limits of trust, memory, and the very notion of a clear mission, leaving the officers—and the audience—wondering where the hunt truly ends and the maze itself begins.
