In the rural expanse of Gatlin, Nebraska, brothers Joshua and his younger sibling Eli find themselves seeking refuge within a nearby cornfield, fearing their intoxicated and abusive father who is intent on causing them harm. As their patriarch approaches, brandishing a scythe, Eli makes a bold choice to confront him, despite Joshua’s frantic urges to evade the danger. This fateful encounter turns grim as Eli, clutching an ancient pagan Bible, calls upon the dark power of “He Who Walks Behind the Rows” to exact vengeance on their father, transforming his lifeless form into a grotesque scarecrow. After checking on Eli’s condition, the siblings leave, inadvertently burying Eli’s sacred text in the very earth that now pulses with sinister energy.

Their lives shift dramatically when they are placed in foster care with William and Amanda Porter in Chicago, following the tragic fate of their father at Eli’s hands. The cultural divide proves overwhelming; the formal wear, Eli’s fervent prayers, and Joshua’s attempts to fit into their new surroundings are met with skepticism and wariness by their foster family and neighbors. That very evening, Eli stealthily escapes the Porters’ home, taking his cherished corn-filled suitcase to an abandoned factory beyond the yard’s boundary, where he invokes He Who Walks Behind the Rows, casting corn seeds upon the desolate ground, which quickly bursts forth with unnatural growth.

The next day introduces the brothers to their new school, where Eli almost finds himself in a brawl with T-Loc, a classmate of Joshua’s. His frustration escalates as he witnesses his peers indulging in modern comforts, leading him to a grim decision to transport the dark presence of He Who Walks Behind the Rows to Chicago, resulting in catastrophic consequences when a homeless man meets a violent end in the cornfield. Meanwhile, Joshua finds himself drawn to their neighbor Maria and befriends her brother Malcolm, creating a rift with his increasingly alienated brother Eli.

As time goes on, the social worker who initially facilitated the brothers’ placement discovers Eli’s shocking, supernatural past—stemming from his origins in the mysterious town of Gatlin, Nebraska. Since 1964, Eli has remained ageless, an apparition tethered to the past. When she attempts to alert others about Eli’s true nature, he ruthlessly silences her, her fate sealed in flames.

Amanda soon becomes suspicious of Eli, whose strange behavior grows more alarming with each passing day. Her efforts to trim the burgeoning cornfield are met with unnatural resistance from the plants, which seem to defend their domain. In her frantic escape attempt, Amanda encounters a horrific accident as she trips over a pipe, leaving a haunting reminder of her demise behind.

William, entranced by the remarkable fertility of Eli’s cornfield, perceives an opportunity that could lead to phenomenal success and sets out to monetize the crop, unaware of the sinister truth that lies within. Together with Malcolm, Joshua embarks on a treacherous quest to the ominous cornfield of Gatlin, where a fierce confrontation with his resurrected father leads them to Eli’s cursed Bible. However, their victory is fleeting as He Who Walks Behind the Rows emerges, a towering, grotesque creature wreaking havoc among the students, devouring Maria in the process. In a desperate act, Joshua targets the monster’s vulnerable, root-like appendage, seemingly vanquishing the beast. He manages to rescue Maria and escapes with the remaining students.

As this nightmarish saga concludes, the ominous arrival of a shipment of Eli’s corn in Germany foreshadows a looming global disaster, hinting at chaos that will soon spiral beyond control.
