Mahender Hooda, also known as Montu Rajkummar Rao, is a lazy, uninspired, and unprofessional physical training instructor (PTI) at a school in Jhajjar, Haryana—a post he landed largely through his father Kamlesh Singh Hooda Satish Kaushik, a lawyer with real local influence. He lives at home with his parents and his younger brother, Dimpy Jatin Sarna, and much of his day-to-day is spent hanging out with his teacher-buddy, Mr. Shukla Saurabh Shukla.
When Neelima Mehra arrives as the school’s new computer teacher, Montu finds himself drawn to her, and the two grow close as she’s nicknamed Neelu Nushrratt Bharuccha. But Montu’s world shifts when the government requires PTIs to hold a physical education degree, and the school hires Inder Mohan Singh Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub to fill the role. Begrudgingly, Montu becomes Singh’s assistant, and it doesn’t take long for him to recognize that Singh is a far more capable coach. His irritation heightens as Neelu spends more and more time with Singh.
A turning point arrives when Singh disciplines Montu’s brother, Bablu Naman Jain, by pinning him to the ground for not paying attention, triggering a fierce confrontation that forces Montu to quit his job. Yet quitting isn’t feasible for long—he returns to the school to challenge Singh in a three-sport showdown: basketball, a 400m relay, and kabaddi. The contest will pit Montu’s team against Singh’s, with the winner earning the right to keep the PTI post and the loser leaving.
Montu’s plan to show humility backfires at first when he lets Singh choose his team first, hoping to impress Neelu and swing the odds in his favor, only to end up with a much weaker squad. As despair sets in, Neelu steps in to bolster his effort, advising him to recruit several girls for the team and to adopt unorthodox training methods. Their regimen includes running from guard dogs to boost speed, catching loose chickens to sharpen agility, and dribbling a basketball through a cow dung minefield to refine control.
These unconventional drills rally the students, but parents push back, arguing that the competition is pulling attention away from studies. Montu’s father, Kamlesh Singh Hooda, with Neelu’s help, manages to win them back over by using blackmail and hinting at reopening existing legal cases. The climactic contest unfolds with Singh’s team narrowly beating Montu’s in basketball, while Montu’s squad pulls off close victories in both the 400m relay and kabaddi. Inder Mohan Singh concedes the defeat, graciously congratulating Montu.
The experience opens Montu’s eyes to the value of learning from a stronger coach, and he proposes a future where they work together, acknowledging that he still has much to learn. After thanking the students and their families for their faith in him, Montu finally confesses his love for Neelu, and she accepts, marking a new chapter for both of them.
