Chastity

Chastity is a young hippie runaway who drifts and hitchhikes, surviving by her wits. She occasionally scams people, such as pretending to be a gas station attendant and keeping customers' payments. She chooses the name Chastity from the dictionary, a symbol of abstinence, purity, and simplicity.

Chastity meets a kind law student named Eddie who is sympathetic to her. He offers her shelter and she spends a short time at his house. The encounter hints at a potential anchor in her wandering life.

Chastity crosses the border into Mexico and winds up in a brothel run by Diana Midnight. After she rips off an inexperienced young male customer, Diana takes a personal interest in her. The two begin a brief romantic relationship, set against Chastity's ambivalence toward being touched.

Initially she seems happy with Diana, despite Chastity's expressed hatred of being touched. The romance deepens and Chastity's volatility surfaces, sometimes leading to anger or destructive outbursts. Diana's attention becomes protective and complicated as the relationship unfolds.

Chastity leaves the brothel and returns to Eddie, whom she renames Andre. They attempt a traditional domestic life together. The fragile comfort of this arrangement is short-lived as memories threaten to intrude.

While Eddie is away, Chastity begins to hear in her head the voices of her parents describing the abuse she endured as a child. The distorted memory overwhelms her and heightens her emotional fragility. The moment foreshadows the deeper motivation behind her erratic behavior.

Chastity's distress erupts as she overturns the dining-room table in a torrent of tears and anger. She confronts the painful memories that have haunted her, breaking the illusion of stability. The scene marks a critical turning point in her relationship with Eddie.

Over the emotional turmoil, she writes I think I love you on Eddie's kitchen wall. The act reveals tenderness tangled with fear and dependence. She then runs away again, heading for the highway.

Crying and traumatized, she runs from Eddie's home toward the highway. The road represents freedom and danger in equal measure, a return to the uncertain life she once led. The pursuit of escape becomes the film's chosen path.

A truck driver pulls up to offer her a lift, presenting a final option between staying or moving on. Chastity hesitates, still haunted by past traumas and uncertain about what she wants. The film ends without showing whether she accepts the ride.
