Vera Hart grows up living with her parents, where her father's antiques business struggles to make money. The family survives on tight finances while dad pours his energy into stock that rarely sells. This economic backdrop informs Vera's quick sense for opportunity and her later ambitions.

Through her friend Molly, Vera lands a menial job at Miller's music instrument factory. The connection introduces Vera to the world of the Millers and the possibility of a better future. This job sets in motion the main relationship at the center of the plot.

Vera indulges in window shopping, trying on expensive clothes and jewellery she cannot afford. On her way home, she visits a car dealership and sits in a brand-new luxury car. This scene crystallizes her longing for status and the thrill of luxury.

Robert Miller, the owner's son, sees Vera and falls instantly in love. He pretends to be a showroom employee to get closer and learn more about her. His charm mingles with deception as he searches for a chance to win her affection.
