In a version of New York that feels simultaneously modern and antiquated, the city itself becomes a museum of memory. Its streets are lined with wax tableaux that reenact moments from ancient Rome, their marble‑white figures casting long shadows over the bustle of contemporary life. This metahistorical backdrop creates a world where history is constantly being performed, revised, and questioned, setting a tone that is both dreamy and subtly unsettling.

​Lafayette, a young French electrician, makes his living among the humming cables and flickering lights of this strange urban landscape. He dwells in a modest basement flat, his daily routine defined by the quiet glow of aging wiring and the occasional roar of the city beyond. His work brings him into close contact with the wax museum’s inner workings, a place where art and power intersect in meticulously crafted scenes of the Roman past. The environment feels confined yet expansive, a place where the ordinary act of fixing a circuit takes on an almost ritualistic significance.

​Andreas Flaxman, the museum’s director, views his collection as a living commentary on authority, while ​Luigi Nocello, a sculptor and Lafayette’s close friend, infuses the exhibits with a darker, more personal edge. Around them swirl a troupe of outspoken feminist actresses, whose rehearsals echo the museum’s themes of violence and resistance. Among the performers, Angelica, a striking actress, becomes a magnetic presence in Lafayette’s otherwise solitary life.
