Donald Drake, an ex soda‑jerk turned gondolier, arrives at Shanghai’s All Nation Café where the owner assumes he’s broke. When he unexpectedly wins a modest sum, the owner sends his American hostesses, Maud and Mollie, to spend it. Donald recounts his past, especially the loss of his true love, and a roulette coin and revelations alter his fate.
